New Viva van Story Pinup Shots! - The Lingerie Addict

Last month, during my most recent trip to NYC Lingerie Market, I took some time to have a daylong photoshoot with the world-famous pinup photographer Viva van Story. This was only my second shoot with Viva, but I really love working with her because she knows how to make the non-model types (like myself) feel fabulous and confident and comfortable in front of a camera. I know that, no matter what, she?s going to get a great shot and that makes what could be an intimidating experience into an incredibly fun one.

A few days ago, she sent over my final edits from the shoot, and I want to share a few of my favorites with you. All lingerie is my own, and I?ve credited the respective brand or designer on the photo.? All photographs are copyright of Viva van Story, hair is by Viva van Story, and makeup is by Margherita.

(AP) ? A chemist at the center of a drug lab testing scandal admitted she faked results for two to three years, forged signatures and skipped proper procedures, a police report shows.

Some of Annie Dookhan's colleagues also had concerns for years about the high number of drug samples she tested and inconsistencies in her work, according to other police reports The Associated Press obtained Wednesday.

Lab employees' interviews with investigators show they convinced themselves their concerns were invalid or reported them to supervisors who didn't intervene to stop Dookhan.

Dookhan's mishandling of drug samples at the now-closed state lab in Boston has thrown thousands of criminal cases into question, authorities say. A handful of defendants already are free or have had their criminal sentences suspended.

Concerns from Dookhan's colleagues prompted two supervisors to audit her work in 2010, but they just looked at paperwork and didn't retest drug samples.

Things started to unravel in the spring of 2011, when Dookhan was caught forging a colleague's initials on paperwork after taking 90 drug samples from evidence, according to police. Another colleague told police it was "almost like Dookhan wanted to get caught."

Anne Goldbach, forensic services director for the Committee for Public Counsel Services, which oversees the provision of legal representation for indigent people, said the new documents show the problems at the Hinton State Laboratory are more troubling than originally believed. She said it appears there was unsupervised access to the lab's evidence office and evidence safe.

While Goldbach said she didn't see evidence of intentional wrongdoing by other chemists, she said that because Dookhan was in charge of quality control equipment other chemists could have gotten false test results without knowing it.

"The fact that she failed to conduct quality control steps ... it calls into question all the testing done by the lab," Goldbach said.

Attorney John T. Martin, who represents several defendants whose samples Dookhan handled, said he believes she changed drug weights to meet statutory standards for stricter sentencing.

Martin said in the cases of four of his clients, Dookhan determined that the weight of the drug sample was just 1 gram above the amount needed for a more serious penalty even though police reports made the seizure seem smaller.

Police say Dookhan told them several times in an August interview that she knew she had done wrong.

"I screwed up big time," she said while becoming teary-eyed, according to the report by investigators for Attorney General Martha Coakley's office. "I messed up bad. It's my fault. I don't want the lab to get in trouble."

Authorities haven't filed charges against Dookhan or commented on her possible motives as their probe continues. Dookhan hasn't responded to repeated requests for comment.

In the Aug. 28 interview with two investigators at her dining room table, Dookhan first denied doing anything wrong when she analyzed drug samples. She changed her story after they confronted her with a Boston Police Department retest of a suspected cocaine sample that came back negative after Dookhan identified it as the narcotic. Police also told her the number of samples she reported analyzing was too high and she couldn't have done all the tests.

The report shows Dookhan then admitted identifying drug samples by looking at them instead of testing them, called dry labbing.

She said she tested about five out of 25 samples she got from evidence, after routinely getting a large number of samples from different cases out of the evidence room, police say. She also told police she contaminated samples a few times to get more work finished but no one asked her to do anything improper, they say.

"I intentionally turned a negative sample into a positive a few times," Dookhan said in a signed statement she gave police.

Dookhan also told investigators she routinely skirted proper procedures by looking up data for assistant district attorneys who called her directly rather than going through the evidence department.

State police say Dookhan tested more than 60,000 drug samples submitted in the cases of about 34,000 defendants during her nine years at the lab. She resigned in March amid an internal investigation by the Department of Public Health.

After state police took over the lab in July as part of a state budget directive, they said they discovered her violations were much more extensive than previously believed and went beyond sloppiness into malfeasance and deliberate mishandling of drug samples.

In the August police interview, Dookhan said that in June 2011 she improperly took 90 samples that weren't assigned to her from evidence and forged another person's initials on a log book after a supervisor questioned her about it. While Dookhan's lab duties were suspended after that, she said she disobeyed orders and continued to give law enforcement officials information on their cases.

Two days after her police interview, Gov. Deval Patrick ordered state police to close the lab.

That day, a police lieutenant spoke with Dookhan to tell her she should get an attorney because she could face criminal charges.

Dookhan cried on the phone, saying she didn't know any lawyers, didn't have money and was in a long divorce with her husband and didn't want to involve family.

(AP) ? The Bank of Spain warned Wednesday that the country is in a deep recession, a day after clashes in Madrid between protesters and the police led to 38 people arrested and 64 injured.

The demonstrations on Tuesday evening against the government's austerity drive at a time of mass unemployment put in sharp relief the scale of discontent that's brewing in a country suffering its second recession in three years and an unemployment rate of nearly 25 percent.

In the wake of the clashes and a warning from the central bank's that the country's economy continues to shrink "significantly," financial markets have grown increasingly nervous. The main IBEX index in Madrid was down a hefty 2.6 percent, while Spain's 10-year bond yield edged back up toward 6 percent.

On Tuesday, several thousand people ? 6,000 according to authorities ? converged on the national Parliament building in central Madrid. More than 1,000 riot police blocked off access to the building, forcing protesters to crowd nearby avenues. Police baton-charged protesters at the front of the march and some demonstrators broke down barricades and threw rocks and bottles.

Smaller demonstrations Tuesday attracted hundreds of protesters in Barcelona and Seville.

The protesters are calling for fresh elections, claiming the government's hard-hitting austerity measures are proof the ruling Popular Party misled voters when it won power last November.

Leaders of the protests said on their website that they would stage a fresh rally later Wednesday.

A National Police spokeswoman said Wednesday that 27 of the injured were police officers. She spoke on condition of anonymity because of police rules.

The government praised the police, saying the protest was an attack on democracy.

"I congratulate the police," said Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz. "They did their duty."

Opposition Socialist party spokesman Eduardo Madina said the government should take note of the popular discontent, adding that some images of the police charges displayed "pure brutality."

The government is expected to present a new batch of economically painful reforms on Thursday when it unveils a draft budget for 2013. Even before enacting the new measures, the government was predicting a 1.5 percent economic contraction this year. The Bank of Spain's warning Wednesday suggests it may be more.

On Friday, an auditor will release the results of stress tests on Spanish banks hit hard by the collapse of the country's real estate sector, which drove economic growth until the 2008 financial crisis hit. The government will then judge how much of a ?100 billion loan it will tap to help bail out the banks. Initial estimates say the banks will need some ?60 billion.

But Spain is also under pressure from investors to apply for European Central Bank assistance in order to keep its borrowing costs down. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has yet to say whether Madrid will apply for the aid, knowing that such assistance comes with conditions.

Body Bar and Body Bar FLEX Benefit Individuals with Autism

WEBWIRE ? Tuesday, September 25, 2012

Boulder, CO ? September 25, 2012 ? Body Bar? Inc., a premier fitness company specializing in products and educational tools for fitness enthusiasts of all ages and abilities today announced that its Body Bar? and Body Bar FLEX? are benefitting children and adults who are on the autism spectrum.

Eric Chessen, M.S., founder of Autism Fitness, has spent a decade developing and delivering successful fitness programs for individuals on the autism spectrum, and the Body Bar is part of his strategy. He is the creator of the Autism Fitness Toolbox, and in addition to working with his athletes, Eric consults, presents, and provides training worldwide to parents, educators, OT/PTs, behavior therapists, and fitness professionals.

?As my athletes, aged ten years and up, progress in their strength and stability, I seek to broaden their physical abilities,? commented Mr. Chessen. ?The stronger and more capable they grow, the easier life?s daily physical challenges. The Body Bar offers just about everything I need in a piece of equipment. The softer grip is great for younger athletes and those who have an aversion to certain textures. I use the Body Bar for squats, back squats, presses, and even hybrid Olympic lifts. I am also a proponent of overhead carries plus combo lifts, which not only develop strength endurance, but teach rhythm and provide a stimulus to the short-term memory center of the brain. The Body Bar is my go-to for teaching many of these exercises.?

Cathy Schafer?s son Alex is a Body Bar FLEX enthusiast. ?When you are a teenager, all you want is to be like everyone else,? said Ms. Schafer. ?As the mom of a 16-year-old with autism, I am constantly looking for helpful tools that are good for all kids, not just my kid. When I found the Body Bar FLEX, I knew that this would be the perfect tool to use for sensory breaks in the classroom. Not only did my son love the Body Bar FLEX, his classmates did too. I would go in periodically and ask how things were going, and all of the kids were enthusiastic, and they all were showing me different ways they used it. I highly recommend the Body Bar FLEX to anyone who needs to incorporate sensory breaks, but doesn?t want to look any different than anyone else. Not only is the Body Bar FLEX one of the best tools I have ever found, the company is absolutely excellent to work with.?

?When I first learned about the Body Bar FLEX I was intrigued by the concept, but I wanted to try it for myself and use them with K-12 students and children on the ASD spectrum,? commented Pete Trapani
owner and operator, 360 Fitness For Life & Health, LLC. ?After using the Body Bar FLEX for two months with a group of children on the ASD spectrum, I included it in my tool box of equipment for all children including kids on the ASD spectrum, and many other populations.?

?The Body Bar FLEX can be used while mimicking almost any type of body movement, like training gross and fine motor skills, incorporating it into complex, multi-planar movements that stress the cardiovascular system,? added Trapani. ?I integrate the Body Bar FLEX into verbal, reading and math movement based learning programs. I include them in aspects of free play and other multi-tasking and memory activities that stress the central nervous system with the goal to strengthen and expand neural networks in various parts of the brain and central nervous system.?

Through an in-kind partnership with Alliance for a Healthier Generation?s Healthy Schools Program, Body Bar Inc. is helping to provide educational support and products to schools nationwide. Body Bar Inc.?s FLEX FIT 15 for KIDS workout uses safe, effective, integrated movement exercises involving compound movements, which work more than one muscle group at a time ? to deliver specific stretching, strengthening, and core conditioning.

?Experiences shared by Body Bar users like Cathy Schafer and Eric Chessen have been incredibly gratifying, and we hear from so many wonderful people who inspire us every day,? stated Craig Williams, president and owner, Body Bar Inc. ?Their words encourage all of us at Body Bar to continue to find ways to reach everyone who can enjoy and benefit from healthy movement and exercise at all levels.?

It Was A Very Good Year (For Health Care Quality)

By Marty Stempniak
H&HN Staff Writer
September 24, 2012

Joint Commission lauds providers for getting it right 96.6 percent of the time.

Picture your worst professional nightmare. What would it be? Leaving a sponge inside a patient? Operating on the wrong limb? Painfully misdiagnosing a disease?

For us reporters, our nightmares are of much smaller scale. No lives are on the line. But that didn't make my freak-out session this morning any less severe when I realized that I lost my digital voice recorder, that precious little depository with a week's worth of interviews stowed away, including the one I wanted to use for this blog.

Okay, sorry I'm dillydallying; I'll get to my point. The Joint Commission revealed its 2012 annual report recently, highlighting what it says are 620 of the nation's top-performing hospitals. That's a more than 50 percent increase from the previous year's results, Mark Chassin, M.D., president of the organization, told reporters during a conference call.

All told, hospitals avoided those professional nightmares ? such as wrong-site surgery or leaving a foreign object inside of a patient ? about 96.6 percent of the time on 16 million opportunities to "provide the right care." That's up from about 95.6 percent on 12 million instances the previous year.

"The Joint Commission began releasing this information as a way to shine a light on and encourage excellence on accountability measures," he says. "The significant increase in the number of hospitals achieving top performers status demonstrates that these organizations are intently focused on delivering high-quality care within their communities."

This is the 10th year that the Joint Commission has been collecting such health care data, Chassin says, and its "Top Performers on Key Quality Measures" dates back to September 2011. The program gives a nod to hospitals that have performed well in 45 different "accountability measures," relating to everything from heart failure, to pneumonia, to surgical care. Top performers achieved a composite score of 95 percent or higher on all accountability measures for which it reports data to the commission.

Three new measures were added in this iteration: stroke, venous thromboembolism and inpatient psychiatric services. And as such, for the first time, 43 freestanding psychiatric hospitals or hospitals with inpatient psychiatric units were included on the top performers tally.

Some of the industry's biggest and most-admired players were noticeably absent from the list. But Chassin pointed out that the bigger providers have a much higher volume of patients to serve, and more accountability measures to meet. Plus, 17 percent of the 3,000 Joint Commission-accredited hospitals missed being a top performer by only one measure, he added.

"When we raise the bar and provide the proper guidance and tools, hospitals have answered with excellent results," Chassin said in a letter introducing the annual report. "Their capacity for continual improvement points toward a future in which quality and safety defects are dramatically reduced and high reliability is expected and achieved. Day-to-day progress will slowly but surely transform today's health care system into one that achieves unprecedented performance outcomes for the benefit of patients we serve."

What's your experience been like in tracking and reporting data to the Joint Commission? Have you seen dramatic improvements in the care you're providing? Or are you still living out your nightmares in the doctor's office? And have you seen a little black Sony voice recorder?

Solavei MVNO will pay you when your friends sign up, $49 a month all-in for those without any

Image

Unlike regular mobile networks, virtual operators -- or MVNOs -- have none of those expensive cellular infrastructures to worry about. Newcomer, Solavei, (which rides atop T-Mobile) is using this freedom to focus in on its business model. Just out of beta, the provider is offering unlimited voice, text and data for $49 per month, or free. Free? Well, if you're silver-tongued enough to talk friends and family into signing up, too, you'll get $20 kickback a month for every three -- or "trio" as the marketing calls it -- that you convince. There are other bonuses and chances to earn money -- all obviously aimed at spreading the network's audience, and offsetting the lower overheads. You can also use your own unlocked phone, or buy one of the three that Solavei currently offers (HTC One X, Wildfire S and ZTE Origin). This isn't the first time we've seen such philanthropic approaches, and it might smack a little bit of MLM, but if your after an all-you-can eat mobile deal, and have a large group of friends, this could be a nice little earner. Still not sold? Perhaps the feel-good corporate video after the break will switch that up.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama, defending his foreign policy record at a time of anti-American rage in the Muslim world, fired back at suggestions from Republican Mitt Romney that the president has been weak with allies and enemies alike.

In an interview airing the night before Obama meets with other world leaders at the United Nations, the president said, "If Gov. Romney is suggesting that we should start another war, he should say so."

It was Obama's most direct rebuttal yet to persistent skepticism by his White House rival on his handling of an unraveling situation in the Middle East. Romney has charged the U.S. stance has been marred by miscalculations, mixed messages and appeasement.

The foreign policy arguments come as both candidates sharpen their strategy just six weeks ahead of Election Day. Speaking to reporters on a flight to Colorado Sunday night, Romney acknowledged he was slipping behind Obama in several swing states and said he would spend more time with voters in the coming weeks.

"I think the fundraising season is probably a little quieter going forward," he said following a weekend largely devoted to raising money in California.

Facing Republican fears that his campaign is moving in the wrong direction, Romney huddled earlier in the day with his top advisers, preparing for next month's debates and crafting a more aggressive strategy.

"I don't pay a lot of attention to the day-to-day polls. They change a great deal," Romney said. "And I know that in the coming six weeks they're very unlikely to stay where they are today."

Obama Is launching a new campaign offensive Monday with his first television advertisement targeting Romney's comments about Americans who don't pay income taxes. The ad, which was to start running in swing state Ohio, argues that Romney should stop attacking others on taxes and "come clean" on his own.

The ad uses Romney's comments to wealthy donors that 47 percent of Americans don't pay income taxes, believe they are victims and feel entitled to government assistance. It shows Romney saying, "My job is not to worry about those people."

The 30-second spot signals that Obama will keep making the wealthy Romney's taxes a campaign issue even after the Republican released a second year of information about his personal finances on Friday.

Romney and Obama both discussed foreign policy in interviews broadcast Sunday on CBS' "60 Minutes."

Romney, who has criticized Obama's response to unrest in Syria and anti-American protests across the Muslim world, broadened his reproach to include Israel. He said Obama's failure to schedule a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the annual U.N. gathering this week "sends a message throughout the Middle East that somehow we distance ourselves from our friends."

The White House has said scheduling precluded a meeting between the two leaders, who won't be in New York at the same time. But Obama pushed back on the notion that he feels pressure from Netanyahu, dismissing as noise the Israeli leader's calls for the U.S. to lay out a "red line" that Iran's nuclear program mustn't cross to avoid American military intervention.

"When it comes to our national security decisions, any pressure that I feel is simply to do what's right for the American people," Obama said. "And I am going to block out any noise that's out there. "

In a wide-ranging interview conducted the day after U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens was killed in an attack on Benghazi, Obama defended his foreign policy successes, noting he'd followed through on a commitment to end the war in Iraq and had nabbed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

He also waxed optimistic that winning a second term would give him a mandate to overcome obstructionism from congressional Republicans whose No. 1 goal, he said, has been to prevent his re-election.

"My expectation is, my hope is that that's no longer their number one priority," Obama said. "I'm hoping that after the smoke clears and the election season's over that that spirit of cooperation comes more to the fore."

Romney, in an interview conducted last week, sought to deflect attention from his running mate, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, over their differences in Medicare policy: "I'm the guy running for president, not him."

While reaffirming his commitment to lowering all income tax rates by 20 percent, Romney expressed no unease about his refusal to offer specifics, such as which loopholes and deductions he'd eliminate to pay for the cuts.

"The devil's in the details. The angel is in the policy, which is creating more jobs," Romney said, adding that he doesn't want to see overall government revenue reduced.

Addressing the seemingly unshakable charge of flip-flopping on policy issues, Romney pointed the finger at Obama, noting his changes of heart on gay marriage and military tribunals for terrorism suspects.

"Have I found some things I thought would be effective turned out not to be effective? Absolutely," Romney said. "You don't learn from experience, you don't learn from your mistakes ?why, you know, you ought to be fired."

The series of interviews also offered glimpses into both candidates' personal habits, including their late-night routines. Romney said his nightly prayer is a time to connect both with the divine and with his own thoughts, and said he asks God mainly for wisdom and understanding.

Obama, describing himself as "a night guy," said that after first lady Michelle Obama and their daughters retire around 10 p.m., he hunkers down for reading, writing and occasionally a moment alone on the Truman Balcony, with the Washington Monument and Jefferson Memorial in view.

"Those are moments of reflection that, you know, help gird you for the next challenge and the next day," Obama said.

The "60 Minutes" interviews came as Romney's campaign strove to turn the page on a week of public stumbles and Republican hand-wringing. On the flight to Colorado, Romney said he's looking forward to next month's debates to help reverse his slide, which he attributed to Obama's aggressive advertising.

"He's trying to fool people into thinking that I think things I don't," Romney said of the president. "And that ends I think during the debates."

Romney blamed his fundraising focus on Obama's decision to bypass traditional spending limits during the 2008 campaign. "I'd far rather be spending my time out in the key swing states campaigning door to door if necessary, but in rallies and various meetings," he said. "But fundraising is part of politics when your opponent decides not to live by the federal spending limits."

After Colorado, Romney was to begin a three-day bus tour in Ohio on Monday followed by a stop in Virginia ? states that Obama won in 2008 but that Republicans claimed four years earlier.

While national polls remain tight, polls in several of the most closely watched states, including Colorado, suggest Obama has opened narrow leads. Obama won Colorado by 9 points four years ago, but the state went to a Republican in the previous three presidential elections.

Obama took a rare weekend break from the campaigning ahead of his U.N. address Tuesday, but dispatched top allies to the Sunday talk shows.

High school football saving brains as game goes on

(Reuters) - In the small northeast Ohio town of Massillon, a few miles from the National Football Hall of Fame, some 20,000 fans pack into a high school stadium, drowning out the roar of a real tiger mascot on the sidelines.

Football is akin to religion in Massillon and, like a religion, it can be resistant to change. For decades jolts to the head were written off as "getting your bell rung" and considered part of the game. Now, concerns about serious brain injuries have penetrated American football culture and high schools are taking action.

After an off-season with suicides by two former National Football League players, publicity over a lawsuit against the league by NFL players and new studies adding to the growing body of research, nearly every state entered the fall season with some type of legislation protecting young athletes.

Jamey Palma, the assistant principal of Washington High School in Massillon, knows the pressure players feel to play through concussions. A high school and college player, he said he suffered four concussions, including one during a game in high school when he stayed in until the end.

The concussion was discovered afterward, when he failed to remember what happened on the field.

"Back in those days, we'd play through it," said Palma, 36.

Now many coaches and players know "seeing stars" might very well be a concussion and a concussion is a brain injury that needs time to heal.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association has devised rules to immediately remove a player and provide him medical attention upon showing signs of a concussion, said Hank Zaborniak, the association's assistant commissioner.

Between 2009 and 2011, 33 states plus the District of Columbia passed laws aimed at preventing concussions in youth sports, and another 15 states have introduced legislation this year, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Only Montana and Arkansas have yet to act.

Many were inspired by the case of Zackery Lystedt, who suffered a life-threatening brain injury and permanent disability when at age 13 in 2006 he was sent back into the second half of a game after suffering a concussion.

With Zackery recovering enough to tell his story, a Washington state coalition of medical professionals, later backed by the NFL and the American College of Sports Medicine, helped pass "Lystedt Laws," first in Washington and then around the country.

"This is a brave young man who put a face on traumatic brain injury," said Dr. Stanley Herring of the University of Washington School of Medicine and a Lystedt Law advocate.

IMPROVED RULES, EQUIPMENT

In the meantime, experts explore improvements in helmet design and advanced mouth guards. Some coaches mandate neck strengthening as prevention. Since 2010, the National Federation of State High Schools rule book requires removing a player from a game when he shows signs of a concussion.

With rule changes and better equipment, death has become increasingly rare. Of 1.1 million high school football players, two died of brain injury in 2011, when a rate of 0.86 per 100,000 players suffered permanent brain damage, according to an annual study by a University of North Carolina researcher.

A 2011 study by researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania found that survivors of a single traumatic brain injury in young adults can show changes in their brains years later, possibly leading to neurodegenerative disease similar to Alzheimer's.

In Ohio, where 715 high schools play football, the rules removed 102 high school football players from games last year. Thirteen of them returned to the game after being checked out by medical professionals but most were held out for the remainder of the game and many for several games.

The Ohio House has passed a bill that would require youth sports coaches and officials to do what Zaborniak's group now requires in high schools - remove a player from a game or practice if the player is exhibiting symptoms or behavior consistent with concussions. The Ohio Senate has yet to approve the legislation.

Alabama is developing a concussion data bank. A California law approved in August requires trainers to understand the signs and symptoms of concussions and know the appropriate responses. Texas, with a reputation as football-mad state, established a protocol for player safety that athletic directors say is among the most stringent in the country.

Pop Warner, the largest youth football organization in the United States, in June imposed rules to reduce contact in practice.

Throughout the country, teenage players are taking cognitive function tests before the season to establish a baseline that can later be used as a comparison for those suspected of suffering concussions.

Sometimes it is the players who take a leading role.

"When I get out of the huddle and I go to the line of scrimmage, I'm looking at the defense, I'm looking at where my teammates are, but now I'm also looking out to make sure everybody is alert and responding, especially if they've just been in a big collision," said Presley Miller, the senior starting quarterback at Clark High School in San Antonio, Texas.

FOOTBALL IS SAVED

In the late 19th century, when American football was an improvised version of rugby, numerous players were badly injured and dozens died playing the game, leading Harvard University President Charles W. Eliot to campaign to ban the sport, according to John J. Miller's 2011 book "The Big Scrum: How Teddy Roosevelt Saved Football."

As president, Roosevelt called the coaches of Harvard, Yale and Princeton universities to the White House in 1905 to promote reforms that would save the sport and ultimately transform it into an industry that generates $9 billion a year for the NFL.

"At a certain level, it's just a re-run of what happened a little more than a century ago," Miller said. "The big difference is that back then players were dying. In 1905 alone, 18 players died from big-time college to the sandlot."

Direct football deaths at all levels peaked at 36 in 1968 and have been reduced to single digits in all but one year since 1978, according to Frederick Mueller, the University of North Carolina expert who publishes an annual survey of catastrophic football injuries.

Since 1984 there have been 164 football brain injuries with "incomplete recovery," which can mean the patients suffer disabilities the rest of their lives, Mueller said. In 2011, there were 13 such brain injuries at the high school level and one at the youth level.

Robert Cantu, a neurosurgeon and Mueller's co-author on the annual injury report, advocates that players under 14 not play tackle football.

THE MEDICINE OF PREVENTION

Watching his son's peewee football team play five years ago, Joe Ackerson was shocked to see young players suffer concussions without the brain injuries being identified.

Instead the boys were allowed to re-enter the game.

"Here were these young kids, ages 10 and 11, getting concussions and it not being recognized as such," said Ackerson, a neuropsychologist who treats brain-injury patients in Birmingham, Alabama. "There was a severe knowledge deficit."

Since then, with the guidance of a task force that Ackerson led, the effort to combat concussions in youth and high school sports has gained prominence in Alabama.

Ackerson also worked with educators and coaches at the Birmingham area's Hoover High School, where his now 16-year-old son plays defensive end, to develop a program for managing concussions and reducing their likelihood.

Hoover, a perennial power, has vowed to stop athletes from concealing their symptoms, no matter if it is a star who stands to lead the team to yet another state championship.

"Even if they're lying through their teeth, we've got a good line on it," said Brandon Sheppard, the school's head athletic trainer.

In Texas, 2011 legislation and increased public awareness have chipped away at old attitudes about concussions, but there are concerns about enforcement.

"I know a lot of coaches who won't go along with it," said Dave Burton, an athletic trainer in Dallas who has worked in pro sports and public schools. "They would rather have a key player at 75 percent than a backup at 100 percent."
