World stocks rise after positive US jobs figures

A man checks his mobile phone in front of an electronic stock board of a securities firm in Tokyo Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012 as Japan's Nikkei 225 index, top center, rose 78.60 points to 9,547.44. (AP) ? Global stock markets mostly rose after a better-than-forecast U.S. jobs report Friday offset gloomier data showing consumer confidence in the world's largest economy had slumped.

The Labor Department's report showed the economy added tens of thousands more jobs than anticipated and the unemployment rate fell from 7.9 percent to 7.7 percent, its lowest level since December 2008.

That suggests the economy is recovering steadily, though concerns remain over U.S. politicians' ability to reach a budget deal to avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff," a mix of tax increases and spending cuts due to kick in next year.

Concern that a deal may not be reached in time appears to be weighing on consumer confidence ? a University of Michigan index showed it fell sharply in December to a four-month low.

France's CAC-40 closed up 0.1 percent to 3,605.6, while Britain's FTSE 100 climbed 0.2 percent to 5,914.4. Only Germany's DAX slipped ? 0.2 percent to 7,517.8 ? on the back of weak industrial production figures and a downbeat economic forecast from the country's central bank.

Major U.S. indexes rose on the open before the consumer confidence figures tempered their rise. By afternoon in New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 0.4 percent at 13,123, while the S&P 500 was flat at 1,414.

Developments in the U.S. budget talks have steered markets in recent weeks and are likely to do so until the end of the year, by which time a deal is expected to be reached.

"It seems investors are also cautious about taking on too much risk ahead of the weekend as the markets have still not heard much news on U.S. policy officials' progress regarding the fiscal cliff," said Shavaz Dhalla, a trader with Spreadex.

Earlier, many Asian stocks also struggled to find a direction. After opening higher, Japan's Nikkei 225 index ended the day 0.2 percent down at 9,527.39. South Korea's Kospi added 0.4 percent to 1,957.45. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.9 percent to 4,551.80. Hong Kong's Hang Seng reversed course and closed down 0.3 percent to 22,191.17.

Mainland Chinese shares posted substantial gains after recent sharp sell-offs. The Shanghai Composite Index climbed 1.6 percent to 2,061.79. The smaller Shenzhen Composite Index jumped 2.1 percent to 786.05.

Benchmark oil for January delivery was up 1 cent to $86.27 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The euro fell 0.2 percent to $1.2938.

(AP) ? When Diane Keaton learned she would receive the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award, the 66-year-old actress immediately began panicking about her speech.

Keaton accepted the diamond-and-ruby-encrusted prize Wednesday at the Hollywood Reporter's 21st annual Women in Entertainment breakfast honoring the most powerful women in Hollywood.

She opened by warning that her speech wasn't funny, then proceeded to crack up the crowd inside the ballroom of the Beverly Hills Hotel.

"I just wanted my speech to be the most touching, heartfelt, funniest, yet also persuasive, because that's what a leader is," the Oscar winner said. "I just knew that my speech had to be way better than Meryl Streep's speech or Jane Fonda or Helen Mirren" ? all previous Lansing Award winners.

Keaton paid tribute to her parents, particularly her mother, who died in 2008 of Alzheimer's. Keaton revealed all the things she wished she would have said to her mom, describing her as "my first and most inspired leader."

Wednesday's breakfast also featured speeches by Sandra Fluke, who encouraged the entertainers and executives in attendance to show girls in leadership positions on screen and hire women for such positions off screen; and Mindy Kaling, who confessed that even though the ballroom was filled with women, she opted to wear Spanx beneath her dress because, "I need to look banging for Diane Keaton."

The breakfast event coincides with the publication of the Hollywood Reporter's annual Power 100 ranking of entertainment's most influential women. Anne Sweeney, co-chairman of Disney Media Networks and president of Disney/ABC Television Group, tops the list for the third consecutive year.

There's still much progress to be made, said the magazine's Editorial Director Janice Min. Quoting comedian Joel McHale, she said, "If women ran Hollywood, 'Magic Mike' would already be a theme-park ride."

Pets Old English Sheepdogs

WESTMINSTER KENNEL CLUB/THE ASSOCIATED PRESSThis 1914 publicity photo provided by the Westminster Kennel Club shows the 1914 Westminster Best In Show winner, Slumber. Sheepdogs have been recognized by the American Kennel Club since the late 1800's and won best in show at Westminster in 1914 and 1975. Breeders in the United States and England are concerned about the drop in the number of purebred sheepdog puppies registered in the two countries each year, as more owners choose smaller dogs like pocket pets and designer puppies.

Uncredited ? AP

LOS ANGELES -- There was a time when old English sheepdogs dominated television screens and newspaper comic strips. Now it's hard to find one beyond a dog show.

Numbers of the high-maintenance longhaired breed, which can weigh close to 100 pounds, are dropping as more owners choose pocket pets and designer puppies that are smaller, travel-ready, easy to care for and cost much less to feed.

"People have more to do and less time to do it, and they have lost interest in old English sheepdogs," said Doug Johnson of Colorado Springs, Colo., the president of the Old English Sheepdog Club of America.

Breeders in the United States and England are concerned about the drop in the number of purebred sheepdog puppies registered in the two countries each year. At the height of the breed's popularity in 1975, when the sheepdog was named best in show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, nearly 16,000 puppies were registered by the American Kennel Club, said Lisa Peterson, who went through club archives for The Associated Press.

But that number dropped within 10 years to fewer than 5,600 dogs and three years ago, the last time AKC numbers were available, there were just over 1,000, she said.

London's Kennel Club, which put the breed on the club's watch list, registered just 401 sheepdog puppies in 2011, said representative Heidi Ancell. The list is reserved for breeds that number between 300 and 450 registrations a year.

But the kennel clubs say they have never lost a breed to extinction. Johnson said it would be up to those clubs to generate interest to prevent the sheepdog from disappearing.

"There are too many of us old die-hards that will go ahead and keep this breed alive," said Johnson, who has 22 sheepdogs under the Bugaboo kennel banner.

David Frei, director of communications for the Westminster Kennel Club and co-host of Purina's annual National Dog Show, said he wasn't too concerned that the breed is in danger. "If you have a dog that can have six, eight or nine puppies, is that a horribly endangered species? Endangered animals are those that have single offspring in a litter," he said.

"We aren't going to lose any of these breeds. But we might have to go to shows to see them," he said.

Most historians believe the dog's origins were in Sussex, England, where they drove sheep and cattle to market. They were called Sussex sheepdogs then, Smithfields when they took ponies to Smithfield Market and bobtailed because their tails were traditionally docked or cut off, Johnson said.

The tails were docked to prove their occupation and to exempt owners from taxes because of their working status, he said. The dogs are smart, adaptable, obedient and agile, and they have a distinctive bark, like two pots clanging together, Frei said.

Pittsburgh industrialist William Wade introduced the dog in the United States in the late 1880s. The breed's club claims five of the 10 wealthiest American families owned, bred and were showing the dogs by 1900.

But, Johnson pointed out, the Morgans, Vanderbilts, Goulds, Harrisons and Guggenheims all had kennel managers and staff to care for the dogs. Sheepdog hair can grow up to 10 inches, which meant grooming could take hours.

Sheepdogs later entered popular culture through Hollywood, which featured them in movies such as 1959's "The Shaggy Dog," and on TV in "My Three Sons" (1960-1972) and "Please Don't Eat the Daisies" (1965-1967). Looney Tunes paired one -- Sam Sheepdog -- with a wolf (Ralph Wolf) in cartoons depicting them clocking in and on duty as predator and guard: "Mornin', Sam." ''Mornin', Ralph."

But by 1982, when Lynn Johnston's newspaper comic strip "For Better or For Worse" added a sheepdog named Farley to the Patterson family, the breed's popularity was already sliding. It still caused a hoopla though, when the real Farley died in 1995 and Johnston wrote his death into the comic strip.

When Jere Marder started breeding sheepdogs 35 years ago, the Valparaiso, Ind., resident said there were 40 instantly recognizable sheepdog breeding kennels across the country. Only about 20 remain, and specialty clubs in cities such as Dallas and Detroit have closed, she said.

Marder, who keeps three show sheepdogs at home, understands the breed can be a burden.

"The breed is a labor of love. You have to love the breed to labor so much," Johnson joked.

Venezuela's Chavez to skip summit due to health

BRASILIA/CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez will not attend a regional trade summit in Brazil on Friday, sources said, an absence sure to heighten speculation over the leftist leader's health.

Before he went to Cuba last week for more cancer-related treatment, Chavez had spoken enthusiastically about attending the Mercosur bloc's meeting in Brasilia to celebrate Venezuela's entry.

He has not been seen in public since November 15.

"Chavez is not coming. They've even canceled the hotel reservation," a Brazilian foreign ministry source said on Thursday. Another Brazilian official said Chavez's logistics and security advance staff were leaving Brasilia.

In Caracas, a source at the Miraflores presidential palace also said Chavez, 58, was not going to travel.

The recently re-elected president went to Cuba nine days ago for "hyperbaric oxygenation" treatment - normally used to treat bone decay caused by radiation therapy.

Chavez has had three cancer surgeries in Cuba since mid-2011. So even though officials were portraying the latest treatment as normal follow-up after radiation, rumors are rampant that it could be more serious.

"If Chavez does not show up at the first meeting where Venezuela is a full member of Mercosur, it will create a lot of distrust over his health," said Marcelo Coutinho, professor of international relations at Rio de Janeiro's Federal University.

Officials have given no detailed information on Chavez's condition.

SPECULATION AND SCENARIOS

His presence in Cuba, where Chavez has spent more than three months in total since his first 2011 diagnosis of cancer in the pelvic region, has overshadowed December 16 regional elections.

Without him on the campaign trail or television, the race for 23 governorships has been a low-key one, failing to light up the public like October's presidential election did with a record voter turnout of more than 80 percent.

Although Chavez continues to sign official papers and make appointments from Cuba, his absence may delay decisions on some major issues like a possible devaluation of the Bolivar currency or an amnesty for jailed opponents.

Various ministers have been visiting him in Havana this week, according to Venezuelan officials.

Chavez allies have lambasted media and others for behaving like "vampires" with speculation about his condition. One pro-opposition journalist said he was using a wheelchair.

Bonds have rallied since his departure, on investor hopes for a change to a more business-friendly government.

Newly appointed Vice President Nicolas Maduro, 49 - a former bus driver and union leader - has assumed a more prominent position amid speculation among Venezuelans over who could replace Chavez should he leave office.

Maduro, who is also foreign minister, was due to represent Venezuela at the Mercosur meeting in Brazil.

Congress chief Diosdado Cabello, a former military comrade of Chavez, is also often touted as a possible successor to lead the ruling Socialist Party.

Under the constitution, an election would have to be held if Chavez were to leave office within the first four years of his new six-year term, which starts on January 10.

That would give a fresh chance to the opposition, which garnered 44 percent of the vote - and a record number of 6.5 million votes - in the October presidential poll.

An internal U.N. report seen by Reuters drew three possible scenarios.

"If Chavez lives, his term will continue to face monumental political, economic and security challenges. If Chavez accepts his mortality and organizes a managed transition, a unified PSUV would likely fare well in a snap election," the report said.

"If Chavez dies unexpectedly without a clear successor, a unified opposition - likely behind former presidential candidate Henrique Capriles Radonski - would stand its best chance to come to power in over a decade."

Chavez is guaranteed a warm welcome and discreet treatment in Cuba because of his friendship with past and present rulers Fidel and Raul Castro, plus the strict controls on information there.

What the devil? Royal Opera stages Meyerbeer rarity

LONDON (Reuters) - The audience at London's Royal Opera House is in for a big surprise on Thursday night.

They will witness German composer Giacomo Meyerbeer's 1831 grand opera "Robert le Diable" (Robert the Devil), a work so rarely performed that virtually no one has seen it, let alone sung it or played it.

In fact, the last time Britain's prestigious Royal Opera House put on the epic work was in 1890, by which time it had fallen out of favor, never to recover fully.

"I think the piece still works today," said Laurent Pelly, the French director with the Herculean task of staging a work that turned Meyerbeer into a superstar when it premiered in Paris nearly two centuries ago.

"I hope they will be taken by the story and the music and the singers," he told Reuters backstage on the eve of opening night. "It's a huge piece."

The chorus is 80-strong, there are 10 dancers, and the principal singers face roles among the most demanding in opera.

Adding to the stress was a last-minute casting change for the key role of Isabelle, which was to have been performed by American soprano Jennifer Rowley in her Royal Opera debut until she was replaced less than a week before the premiere.

"It was a musical problem," Pelly explained. "We were doing five weeks and in the end it was not possible to do, so it was very important to find somebody else," he added, speaking in English.

Italian Patrizia Ciofi was brought in with the advantage that she had worked with Pelly before and, crucially, was one of the few sopranos who had previously performed Robert le Diable.

"Three days is very short of course, but I know Patrizia," Pelly said.

Ciofi will sing the first four performances (December 6, 9, 12 and 15) and Russian soprano Sofia Fomina will take over for the final two shows on December 18 and 21.

PARIS TRIUMPH

When Meyerbeer started work on Robert le Diable, he set out to create a hit. Pelly likens the opera to a Hollywood blockbuster, light on subtlety but rich in action, special effects, stirring music and melodrama.

Set in the times of knights, jousting and chivalry, the story follows Robert's quest for the hand of Isabelle and his dangerous dance with the devil, and contains the once notorious scene of nuns' ghosts dancing provocatively by their tombs.

The effect on audiences in 1831 was sensational. They fell in love with the opera, which quickly became a favorite around the world and was deemed a masterpiece by Frederic Chopin.

Degas captured it in paint and, according to Pelly, its influences can be traced to popular works by composers including Bizet, Offenbach and Gounod.

Why it had fallen from grace by the 20th century is not clear.

"During the 19th century a lot of composers were inspired by Robert le Diable and by Meyerbeer, and 60 or 70 years after it seemed very old fashioned, there were too many performances and everybody knew it," said Pelly.

"I think the opera-goer wanted to forget it."

Other factors included the expense of staging such a large work, the emerging talents of Wagner and Verdi and its running time of over four hours. Except for Sunday's matinee, there are, unusually, plenty of tickets left on the Royal Opera website.

Some experts link its decline to Wagner, who was heavily influenced by Meyerbeer early on but turned on the composer and sought to disassociate himself from him.

Search Challenge: Why is This Blank Spot So Special? The other day I was out riding my bike from one Google building to another and came across this rather odd looking, empty field. It's not a park, it's not a business, it's not an as-yet-undeveloped tract?it's just? blank!

Given that land prices in Silicon Valley are sky high (this is a place where rental costs are figured in dollars/square foot!), it struck me as strange that this place would be so unused.

Question for today: Where is this blank spot and why is it blank? (I'm looking for the street address.)

For extra credit, can you say what physical connection this place has with the Sierras and 37.48309, -122.31522 ??

And....for the gold: What on earth does John Muir have to do with this blank spot in Silicon Valley?

As usual, please let us know HOW you figured this one out (what was your process-let us know so we can all learn from your brilliant search skillz). AND? HOW LONG did it take you to figure this out?

(AP) ? Britain's prime minister has warned newspaper editors they must act quickly to set up an independent press regulator in the wake of a media ethics scandal.

David Cameron spoke days after a report he commissioned on press wrongdoing proposed that the press should be regulated by an independent body enshrined in law.

Cameron has expressed misgivings about that and on Tuesday participated in a summit to hear proposals for a new system not backed by law.

He told the BBC that he'd said there that "the clock is ticking" for the industry to implement changes outlined in the report from Lord Justice Brian Leveson.

The report made recommendations to root out a sub-culture of unethical behavior that led to Britain's phone-hacking scandal.

What does help for moms look like?

My husband has traveled for work since the earliest days of our marriage. On a good week, he might only have one overnight. On less good occasions, he?s gone for two weeks at a time. In the earlier days, when he came home from a trip, there was always a struggle with reentry. I was ready to sit down and take a load off?he was too?and we miscommunicated about who was ?on? for the kids.

At times, it seemed more difficult when he was home than when he was away, because when he was home, I was burdened not just by what needed to be done around the house, but also with the expectation that he might do more of it.

It took me several years to figure out that my expectations were not the solution to our maladies, but were rather, the problem.

This little window in our marriage comes back to me now, as I?ve been following a recent conversation with my Patheos neighbors, about what the Church might do to support mothers of young kids. It started with Calah?s very relatable admission that having lots of young kids at home is difficult and stressful, and makes her question how much longer she can remain faithful to the Church?s teaching on birth control. The Anchoress suggested that Parishes might do more to help mothers in Calah?s position. And Calah agreed:

?But I do think that there is a real problem with the Church?s teaching on the morality of birth control. It?s the same problem that many pro-choicers point out (inaccurately, I believe) when citing the Church?s hypocrisy on abortion; namely, lack of follow-through support. The Church says, ?don?t use birth control, have big families? and then when we do, and when we find ourselves drowning because of it, there?s no help. No support.?

There have been many comments on both posts expressing a need for some kind of mother?s ministry, and yet little consensus on the particulars of what such a ministry might do. Some have suggested a mother?s group that meets at church to commiserate. Some have suggested a committee that brings meals to families with new babies. Others have suggested recruiting the grannies in the Parish to make home visits and offer respite care or companionship to young mothers. All are worthy suggestions, and I?ve seen all of them done, in different communities at different times, with varying degrees of success.

But when it comes to naming a one-size-fits-all nationwide ministry within the Catholic Church to meet the needs of all mothers of young children, I think we?re grasping at straws. Here?s why:

Mothers come in all shapes and sizes, and at different times in their lives, they need different things.?

?As one mother said, having someone come into her home would make her feel like she had to clean up and entertain. Many moms feel stressed about getting a bundle of children dressed and out of the house to go to a meeting. And as for a mentorship or companion ministry?well? friendship must come first. I can?t imagine opening up my soul and my challenges to someone I didn?t know well. I would withhold to avoid judgement. Or I would at times just want to vent without my issues becoming ISSUES that need solving. There are good reasons to share our struggles and commiserate, and there are also good reasons not to concretize every negative thought by giving it voice.

After my first was born, my largest complaint was that I felt bored and isolated. I was also very possessive of my first born and didn?t want to leave him with just anybody. I did drive-bys of MOMS and MOPS, and ultimately settled on the La Leche League, which let me keep my baby with me, had flexible meeting times, no spiritual agenda, and it often led to social opportunities afterwards. I had been looking for friendship, and something to do WITH my baby. For my needs at that time, my particular Parish didn?t have the best offerings.

When I had two kids I went on an exercise kick and spent every morning at the YMCA where there was free childcare with my membership. During this stage, I craved alone time, and a way to burn off steam. The Y helped tremendously.

When I had three kids, I started to feel starved spiritually. Mass attendance was a hot mess with babies and toddlers?I couldn?t pay attention from the cry room. I was never alone, and couldn?t find opportunities to pray. I didn?t want to go to a meeting?I wanted time to collect my thoughts and meditate? in silence. Fortunately, I found several other moms in the neighborhood who were in the same boat, and we put together our own co-op called ?play and pray.? A couple moms would watch the kids in a room at the Parish, while the other moms could visit the adoration chapel or run errands. We met once a week, then every other week, then we fizzled out?because moms of lots of young kids get tired of packing up crap to leave the house each week. In the end, it was easier to stay home and stay frustrated than to go out and get more frustrated.

When I had four young kids, and I was pregnant with another, I was just exhausted. An elderly lady in the Parish offered to come help out at my house between 2-4 on Wednesdays and I turned her down, because frankly, it was too little too late. I needed a ?Me? replacement?a long hospital stay?weeks of recuperation. It had taken me years to get so tired, and a little break on Wednesday afternoons just wasn?t going to help anything.

Time ultimately did the trick?but I remember those years as sort of a dense fog with no good options. I had too many to take out and was too tired to leave home, but also too bored to stay there. I slept a lot, as I recall, and the kids watched TV. My prayer life languished.

Now, I?m expecting my sixth, and my oldest children can be left at home for short periods of time. All the kids do pretty well at Mass. My biggest challenge is getting my own voice heard over the noise. I never would have believed anyone five years ago who told me six kids would be easier than three, but it is for me. The bigger kids are helpful. I?m less stressed about leaving the younger ones in childcare when necessary, and most of my friends are the same ones I?ve had since our kids were babies.

I?ve been thinking back over the years, and trying to figure out where exactly the Church would have come to my rescue. At the time I needed help the most, my needs were greater than anyone, even my husband, could have supplied?much less a few elderly volunteers. Before that, there were already organizations (not the Church) in place to meet my particular needs, which were pretty shifty from year to year.

It?s probably reasonable to look to the Church for help for young mothers, and yet in hindsight, the best help the Church could have provided me, and did provide me, was Sacramental support and a teaching authority that, while challenging on the whole, has led to a richer life than I would have designed for myself. I?m glad I followed it, even at the times I was most tempted to stray.

Now that I?ve had a chance to catch my breath as a mother and volunteer at my Parish as a catechist, I can see just how much our Parish does with very limited resources. The ministries that are already in place are performed by the same handful of volunteers who make everything in our Parish happen. The Parish council is composed of the same people who do Faith formation. Saint Ann?s altar society also does funeral meals. Knights of columbus IS the Buildings and Grounds committee. Who can do more for the Parish than they?re already doing? We?re all doing the best we can.

This is what I didn?t realize about my husband in those early days of our marriage: he was doing the best he could too. We were both stretched to our limits. When it came down to the wire, and he would ask me, what in particular he could do for me, I was tongue-tied.? I wanted him to do it all. I wanted him to do it my way. But more than anything, I wanted him to appreciate me, and how hard I was working. And he wanted the same from me.

When I released him of my expectations for how he should spend his time when he was at home, I also released our relationship of a tremendous burden?that of fulfilling a pie-in-the-sky obligation that I could never properly name.

I think we fall into the same trap when we make demands of the Church, holding that wherever I have a vested interest, the Church must meet my needs. I?m being chaste, therefore the Church must be my matchmaker. I?m not using birth control, so the Church must be my nanny. I?m fighting a culture war, so the Church must provide me with beautiful liturgy, better music, and fine art.

The Church is Christ?s body on earth, and as such, it doesn?t really owe any of us anything.

On the contrary, we owe Christ and his body on earth good marriages strengthened over time by our individual and gradual perfection in virtue; we owe him fidelity even at the times when being faithful causes us suffering; we owe him the best music, art and liturgy we can provide because it?s balm for a suffering body, not necessarily because bad art is an affront to me, personally.

And we all owe the Church our open eyes, and whatever able bodies our family can provide to meet the needs of our Parish community? even if that means interrupting my worship at Mass and going to the one mother in the back of the Church with the noisiest most annoying child and asking, with all the love and kindness I can muster, if I can help. She?ll probably say no the first time, but it might make her feel more welcome, in spite of her fear that she brings chaos wherever she goes. And the next time I offer, she may let me hold the baby, while she deals with the noisy toddler. And the third time I offer, she may begin to consider me her friend.

(AP) ? Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has arrived in the Czech Republic for talks on energy policy in a country heavily dependent on Russian fuel.

It's her first stop in a five-day trip to Europe. Also on her agenda are Turkey's defense and U.S. relations with Pakistan.

Clinton joins NATO foreign ministers in Brussels to discuss Turkey's request for Patriot missile assistance. Violence is raging in neighboring Syria, which is believed to have several hundred surface-to-surface missiles capable of carrying chemical warheads ? a particular concern for Turkey, a NATO member.

On Friday, NATO said it will deploy the Patriots within weeks after the move is approved.

Clinton will also meet Pakistan's foreign minister, Hina Rabbani Khar.

Clinton's trip ends Friday with visits to Ireland and Northern Ireland.

First Person: 'expected salary' or what I think I'm worth?

Five million Americans are among the long-term unemployed--those without a job for 27 weeks or longer--according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Another 7.3 million are looking for work, while the unemployment rate sits at 7.9 percent. Numbers aside, individual stories illustrate how America is affected. To see how joblessness hits home, Yahoo News asked unemployed workers to share their job-hunting stories. Here's one.

FIRST PERSON | As a TV news photographer, I hauled my growing family from state to state, eventually ending up in Cincinnati as the manager of a 21-person photography staff making more money than I had ever made in my career. Then, in 2010, I was called in and told my position was being eliminated and so was I.

I was on the job hunt, seeking out a video position in the Cincinnati area, but I had little luck. So, I expanded my search to the lower 48 states, and I filled out a dozen applications a week. I interviewed in Nashville, Tenn., Orlando, Fla., in Kansas and at the University of Arizona. Nothing was successful.

While job-hunting, invariably, there came a part of the application where I was asked to state what I expected to make as a salary.

This posed a problem. Depending on the job in question, if I stated what I made previously as a manager ($73,000) I would immediately price myself out of the job. If I reduced the amount, I would be undervaluing myself and losing money. Some say to just put "negotiable" in the window and move on, but the application program often only accepts numbers and displays an error message with this tactic. Lately, my method has been to put "$1" in the window, which is my numeric equivalent of negotiable.

My point is this: If the company I'm applying to finds the concept of salary a deal-maker or a deal-breaker, why not clearly state the maximum salary or the range the company will pay in the want ad?

This way, I (or you) can decide to apply or not, saving both us and the company time, effort and frustration. If the company feels this is valid information to ask, why is it not equally valid to state in the ad? Like most, I'm looking for a position that pays as much as possible, but I'm also aware I won't make the same amount as I did as a manager. I'm OK with that, as the wife thankfully has a good job. But I don't want to work for nothing, either.

Some do post the numbers and good on them for doing so. But a frustrating majority does not, and that causes unnecessary anxiety in a time where many of us are already maxed out on our own personal anxiety.

Eventually, I landed an $11-an-hour job at a sales warehouse (counting jeans, sweatshirts and tools for inventory). This was meant to be temporary, but the work kept dragging on. Finally, in March 2011, I found a staff photographer position at a Cincinnati TV station. At $31,000 a year, I hadn't made that little since 1993. I was grateful, though; I was working in TV again! I worked there for a year and a half, but I was going broke. My daughter just entered college, and I had two small ones at home.

When my wife found a job in financial services in Fort Worth, Texas, and moved there for the job, the kids and I soon followed. That's where I am now, working a seasonal job at a national big box store, making $8 an hour to arrange toys on a shelf.

But I tell no one about it because, right or wrong, I'm ashamed.

I even made sure that the store was not in my neighborhood so I wouldn't see anyone I know or they me. I know this is an unreasonable attitude and that I should be glad to just have a job. I really, honestly, truly do realize how immature these thoughts I'm experiencing are, but I can't deny they constantly push themselves into my conscious thought so regularly that I'm forced to confront and deal with them as corrosive to my everyday well-being.

Although I feel threatened by my self-perceived obsolescence, I still find comfort and confidence in my knowledge, skills and abilities in video and communication in general. It's funny, but despite all of my insecurities that swirl around me like leaves in fall, I still know that I do what I do very, very well.

If only someone would give me the chance.

Bruce Krasting On Social Security - Business Insider

Social Security (SS) has released its estimates for the December data for benefits payed and taxes received. With this info, I can estimate the 2012 results that will be formally reported in five-months. It was a ho-hummer of a year for SS, it tread water vigorously, and ended up with a cash deficit of $46.7B, just a tad more red ink that 2011?s $45.6B. The pieces of the pie, and YoY comps:

Payroll tax receipts: ? $712.7B ??????? (+6.5%)?

(Includes payment from Treasury Re the 2% tax cut)

Income from Tax on Benefits? $27.1B ????????? (+15%) !!

(Means test)

Total Cash Receipts ? ? ? ? ? ?$739.8 ? ? ? ? ? ?(+7.0%)

Benefit Payments ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?$780B ? ? ? ? ? ? (+6.9%)

(Includes RR interchange)

Overhead ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?$6.7B ? ? ? ? ? ? (+4.7%)

Total cash Outlay ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?$786B ?????????? (6.8%)

Net cash flow loss ? ? ? ? ? ? ? $46.7B ????????? (+2.4%)

Interest income ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?$111.4B ? ? ? ? (-1.7%)

(non-cash)

Accounting surplus ? ? ? ? ? ? $64.7B ???????? ?(-2.5%)

(Paper minus cash)

Number of Beneficiaries ? ?$56.8m ? ? ? ? ?(+2.5%)

Some thoughts on these results:

- The $46.7B annual cash deficit is the third in a row. The 2012 shortfall confirms it; SS will never see a cash flow surplus again. Every dollar of the cash shortfall?MUST?be funded by selling additional debt to the public.

I hope this is clear. I?ll repeat it.?Social Security is adding to the debt held by the public. It is forcing the country to borrow more to fund current operations. When Senate Democrats, like Dick Durbin and Harry Reid say,??SS does not add a penny to our debt.????they are lying.

+++

- The Tax on Benefits is up to a meaningful $27.1b (+15%). The increase is the result of many newly retired folks who are? getting SS, and also have other income (investments and pensions). This forces them to add the SS income into their tax base.?THIS IS A ?MEANS TEST?.

I emphasize this fact as there is very strong opposition to the concept of a means tax for SS by Democrats in Washington and the liberal press (Dean Baker).?But it already exists!

Liberals don?t like means testing because it undermines the principals of SS. It makes it appear that SS is a form of welfare. The fear is that if SS is labeled as welfare, the popularity of the program would quickly wane. So the staunchest supporters of SS are avoiding a fix that could patch the finances for the worst reasons. They are supporting Roosevelt?s dreams, at the expense of the base they say they are trying to protect.?Only in America?.

The problem with the existing Tax on Benefits is that it does not cut deep enough to fill the bucket. I advocate that the tax bite for high-end seniors be increased. I will go further, and state that the means test for SS benefits should be based on assets, not just income that can be manipulated.

My strong feelings on means testing? SS benefits are to my personal disadvantage; my SS benefits would be gone under my plan. I say this now, as I know there will be many who will throw rocks at me for my stance. I can already see the words,??I paid for it, the money is mine!??I say,?Sorry, this will come sooner or later.?

My gripe is that the generation that is causing the problem, the Baby Boomers, is getting off scot-free. All of the proposals to tweak SS (Age and inflation adjustments) would phase in over twenty-years. With this, the bulk of the baby boomers would get a free ride. This doesn?t seem fair at all to me. Society, as a whole, will have to pay for the Boomers, but the Boomers should shoulder a higher percent of the cost.? By no means should their political clout result in an unfair outcome. This is a political ?Kick of the Can?, ?screw folks sometime in the future?. A downright ugly plan at that.

+++

- In 2012 the Treasury paid SS $115B to offset the drop in income related to the 2% reduction in payroll taxes for the year. The operating results (including the Treasury contribution) still produced a cash flow deficit of $46.7B. In other words, the shortfall for 2012 added?$162B?to the borrowing requirements at Treasury. This borrowing resulted in a dollar-for-dollar increase in the Debt Owed to the Public.?

+++

-? There was an improvement (+6.5%) in the YoY payroll tax income. A portion of the better results are annual ?Adjustments?. 2012 had positive adjustments to revenue from the prior year totaling $2.1B, while 2011 had negative adjustments of $8.6B. Taken together, the real rate of increase for revenues at SS is closer to 5.2%.? This data can be used to create an estimate of total payroll income (Adjusted payroll income / Tax rate {12.4%} :

2011 estimated SS total payrolls = $5.658T

2012 estimated SS total payroll = $5.951T

YoY change = $293B (1.8%)

The ~$300B of increased pay seems like a very big number, but when you consider that inflation is running at about that same 1.8%, most folks are getting no place fast.

I draw this comparison to make a point about the huge numbers that are part of the economy. A $300B increase in worker?s incomes doesn?t move the needle at all.?Amazing?

Note: This quickie numbers analysis does not reflect the cap of $106.5K on SS tax, nor other sources of income that is not taxed by SS. I don?t think this skews the results/conclusions by much. Social Security has 155m in its pool, significantly larger than the Non-Farms Payroll (135m). These numbers cover a big slice of the American pie.

+++

- The YoY increase in Benefits of $50.1B (6.9%) is a reflection of?A)? A COLA increase of 3.6% and?B)?A net increase of 1.4m in the number of beneficiaries. The costs at SS rose at a pace that is far higher than the economy grew in 2012. Approximately 11,000 people enter the system every day. 7,000 current members of the club, well, they leave the system 24/7.

+++

- Interest income is down 2.5% in 2012. The decrease of $1.1B is modest, but also significant. The passage of time and ZIRP/QE, has caught up with SS?s investment portfolio. The interest income at SS for 2011 will prove to be the zenith; from now on, the interest income at SS will be in annual decline. This is an important milestone, a decidedly negative one at that.

?The Federal Reserve has cheapened the cost of money at the expense of SS. One can argue the merits of this tradeoff, but what can?t be argued, is the consequence to SS. If the Ten-Year were at 4% (Versus the 6% long-term average) it would add $700B to SS interest income over the next (critical) ten-years.

?If you listen to Bernanke, the other Fed Doves, guys like the WSJ?s Jon Hilsenrath, and all of the economists on TV, you would think that there is no consequence to the government of perpetual cheap money. Actually, what Bernanke is doing is dramatically shortening the day of reckoning for SS. The current thinking is the SS ?go bust? date is 2033. But when SS releases its annual report in May, it will confirm that the date has been brought forward a few years, and the culprit is cheap money. ?I wish that someone other than the blog world would point these things out. Bernanke is no pal of SS, Very Important People, like Paul Krugman, love SS and also hail Bernanke?s endless cheap money. I guess they don?t see the conflict.

+++?(finally, sorry for running on)

- There was no crisis at SS in 2012, and there won?t be a real crisis for a number of years to come. The growing annual cash deficits are now ?programmed? to happen. This gives Democrats the opportunity to say,??Hands off SS?. ?It ain?t broke, so don?t try to fix it?.

My guess is that the Democrats will prevail on SS with regard to the current fiscal cliff debate. As a result, there will be no changes to SS. Should that be the outcome, in about five years the wheels will fall off the cart. By then, SS will be running cash deficits of at least $200B a year. It will be much harder to ?fix? than today.

Business Loans | OVIEW.NET

The company loan is an essential part of most business operations. To be totally clear though, we are talking about business finance in the form of the loans that businesses take out instead of any loans they may well make themselves. There?s a number of distinct sorts also, based on what?s actually involved. We?ll go via a couple of of them here.

So first of all you have your bog standard commercial loan. This is a loan which will probably be acquired by a enterprise just because it is a nicely run company, it has a decent turn over and it will be able to pay for the loan via its revenue. There?s nothing special involved here and it?s something that banks will make accessible. To get the best prices though, the best interest rates on commercial loans, going to a commercial broker can be a excellent idea. There are plenty of other enterprise lenders out there who may well just offer lower rates than the banks are doing.

Then you?ve your loans that are connected to something in specific. So there?s your asset finance, for instance. This indicates that you are able to acquire a capital asset, some piece of machinery for instance, but not pay outright for it. Rather you?ll be able to get financing so that you?ll be able to pay for it in instalments. The folks you?re purchasing the asset off might not be willing to go for that arrangement, but you should be able to locate a commercial lender who is willing to purchase it for you, and then you?ll pay them back. It makes the asset more costly in the long run, but signifies that your cash flow is substantially improved.

Similar to asset finance is property finance.

Again, rather than paying for it upfront, something only extremely rich and liquid businesses would be able to complete anyway, they can get a commercial mortgage. This can be something banks will also supply but to get commercial mortgage rates as low as you?ll be able to going to a commercial broker is good business generally.

Then you?ll find the less conventional business finance alternatives, things that banks do not always provide. That may be things like factoring. In a factoring arrangement, the commercial lender will pay for invoices that the business sends out. They pay about 90% straight away, and then after the client has got around to truly paying it, then the organization will get the rest. Needless to say that?s less the fee that the lender takes for providing the organization with this service. Invoice discounting is precisely the very same except that the client will not know what?s going on, they will not realise that a lender is involved.

When things are not going so properly what a organization is going to need, perhaps, is an insolvency arrangement. Sometimes organizations take too long, they don?t need to admit to themselves that they are in severe difficulties, and they are unable to stay away from

Boycott-hit voting begins in Kuwait

KUWAIT CITY (AP) ? Deeply divided Kuwait opened polling stations Saturday to pick a new parliament that's certain to side with the ruling establishment after a widespread election boycott by opposition groups.

The voting underscored the deepening tensions in the strategic Gulf nation, a major oil producer and hub for U.S. ground forces as part of the Pentagon's military counterweight to Iran.

Opposition groups ? ranging from hardline Islamists to Western-leaning liberals ? have already called the new parliament illegitimate because of the boycott and could increasingly shift their protests to the streets against Kuwait's ruling family.

The anti-government groups have bitterly denounced a decree in October by Kuwait's emir to end an unusual balloting system that allowed four choices per voter.

Critics claim the new one-vote-per-person rule will make it easier for state authorities to potentially influence the outcome. On the eve of the election, more than 15,000 people joined a peaceful pro-boycott march in the first rally permitted by authorities since a ruling last month banning gatherings of more than 20 people.

Security forces watched over polling stations, but there were no immediate indications of unrest or boycott supporters trying to disrupt the voting. Some opposition groups predict turnout could be well below 50 percent.

Kuwait has the Gulf's most political powerfully parliament, which was in the hands of Islamists and their allies earlier this year before the courts dissolved it over a legal challenge by the ruling establishment over electoral districts.

The country also has some of the widest political and media freedoms among the Gulf Arab states, but key government posts and policies remain under the control of the ruling family.

The region's popular uprisings have not spilled over to Kuwait in a major way as in nearby Bahrain, and it remains unlikely opposition groups would wage an all-out challenge to the current system and risk losing the generous cradle-to-grave benefits provided by the state.

But clashes last month between protesters and security forces displayed the potential for violence to escalate.

Kuwait also has been hit by a wave of labor unrest and strikes earlier this year, including walkouts that grounded the state carrier, Kuwait Airways, and temporarily closed customs posts and left several hundred trucks stranded at the border.

Calls for better working conditions have grown louder in the wake of the Arab Spring uprisings. Kuwaitis are used to well-paid government jobs and benefits that increasingly have become a burden on state finances despite the country's huge oil wealth.
