S. Africa charges miners with murder of fellow workers

South African prosecutors on Thursday charged 270 mine workers with the murder of 34 striking colleagues shot dead by police, in a decision panned as "madness".

Police said they acted in self defence when they opened fire on workers at a platinum mine outside Rustenburg, northwest of Johannesburg, killing 34, after a stand-off that had already killed 10 including two police officers.

The incident was the worst day of police violence in South Africa since the end of white-minority apartheid rule in 1994.

Prosecuting authorities said the 270 detained workers would face trial for the murder of their colleagues.

"The court today charged all the workers with murder, under the common purpose law," the spokesman for the prosecutor's office Frank Lesenyego said.

He did not give details saying they would be revealed in court next week.

Julius Malema, a former youth leader with the ruling ANC, however, said he was dismayed by the decision to charge the miners who survived the August 16 bloodbath at the Marikana mine.

"That is madness. The whole world saw police kill those workers. The policemen who killed those miners are not in custody," he said.

A legal expert also questioned the decision to lay charges.

"In charging the miners for the death of miners killed by the police, I don't see how common purpose doctrine could be used here," said Vincent Nmehille, a law professor at the University of the Witwatersrand, referring to a so-called common purpose law under which they had been charged.

Meanwhile, talks to end the dispute continued with mine owners Lonmin and mediators optimistic about a breakthrough to end the three-week strike over wages.

The talks brokered by government officials entered their second day after negotiators met for 12 straight hours the day before in Rustenburg.

"I think today will be the deciding day in terms of the way forward. I think it's D-Day," mediator Bishop Jo Seoka from the South African Council of Churches told AFP.

Lonmin spokeswoman Sue Vey said the government mediation was "very constructive". "We hope to find a resolution today," she told AFP.

The company wants a "peace accord" sealed before starting negotiations on workers' wage demands. But workers, who say they earn 4,000 rand ($470, 380 euros) a month and want 12,500 rand, insist they will not go back underground until their demands are met.

Representatives of big player the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the smaller Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), whose bitter rivalry has been blamed for the unrest at the mine, are also at the talks.

A strike leader, Zolisa Bodlani, told workers gathered near the hill where police shot dead their colleagues that wage demands would be discussed.

The strike has paralysed operations at Lonmin's Marikana mine since 3,000 rock drill operators downed tools on August 10.

As the deadlock approached its fourth week, worker attendance slid even further with only 6.6 percent of the 28,000-strong workforce reporting for duty on Thursday. It was 7.7 percent on Wednesday.

Mines Minister Susan Shabangu has meanwhile tried to calm investors' nerves over the strike that has paralysed operations at the Marikana mine which accounts for about 92 percent of Lonmin's annual output.

"We urge our investors, incumbent and prospective, to take comfort in the solid foundations set by our constitution, government, legal and civil institutions and the leadership shown by our government," Shabangu said in a speech delivered Wednesday at a conference in Perth, Australia.

London-listed Lonmin lies on South Africa's platinum belt where Anglo-American Platinum, the world's leading producer of the metal used in car exhausts and jewelry, is also based.

Apple's Secret Employee Training Manual Revealed

The secret's out. Apple's confidential employee training manual has been revealed to the masses.

[More from Mashable: Will Samsung Smartphone Sales Be Banned in the U.S.? We Won?t Know Until Dec.]

The latest Genius Training Student Workbook for Apple sales staff landed in the hands of Gizmodo, which shared its spoils on Tuesday. It should be noted, however, that nowhere in the story does Gizmodo mention Apple confirming that the manual is legitimate.

Still, it is compelling reading. The book schools employees on basic human behavior, and helps them relate to customers -- all in the name of a sale. "Everyone in the Apple Store is in the business of selling," the manual states pointedly.

[More from Mashable: How You?re Using Your iPad [INFOGRAPHIC]]

Selling is summed up in the acronym, APPLE, which stands for Approach, Probe, Present, Listen and End. Staff are encouraged to show empathy -- a repeated theme throughout the tome. They even go through empathy exercises that role play possible customer situations. The workbook lays out guiding principles, such as, "We deepen and restore relationships" and "We enrich their lives."

Employees are taught about positive and negative human emotions. For the uninitiated, people show frustration by making "fist-like gestures" and boredom by giving a "blank stare." Conversely, "hand rubbing" shows expectancy and an "unbuttoned coat" demonstrates cooperation.

In Apple's eyes, negativity is a no-no, so the workbook outlines a section that prohibits staff from using words like "bomb" and "crash," and instead replacing them with "unexpectedly quits" or "stops responding." This emphasis on positivity extends to relationships between employees, who are encouraged to give "fearless feedback" rather than openly criticize each other.

Every Apple "Genius" must also attend a 14-day bootcamp that mandates programs as diverse as "Using Diagnostic Services" and "The Power of Empathy."

What do you think of the manual? Tell us in the comments below.

Golf tournament to help provide nutritional support

By: Amy Wagner | Culpeper Star-Exponent

With a heart for children in need, a local woman has organized a golf tournament to provide nutritional support to children in the Culpeper area, who would normally go without, during the school year.

All golfers are encouraged to tee off at the Culpeper Country Club on Friday, Sept. 7 at 10 a.m. and participate in a silent auction that closes at 3 p.m.? A $75 registration fee includes 18 holes of golf, a cart and lunch and the benefits to area kids are immeasurable.

The idea evolved out of a similar project facilitated at a church in Haymarket. Jennifer Hulse, who calls her project the Power Pack Program, wanted to provide children from Culpeper with weekend meals so they wouldn?t go without.?

After presenting her idea to her pastor, Randy Orndorff, at Culpeper United Methodist Church, Hulse was directed to the Missions committee. Receiving their support, Hulse, who moved to Culpeper from Texas in 2006, ran with the idea and CUMC agreed to provide the home for her project.

Initially, the Power Pack Program will provide 12 students from Emerald Hill Elementary School with two breakfast, two lunch, and two dinner meals each weekend, including two snacks and beverages. These students are on the reduced meal plan and their families have reached out for extra assistance.

The packs will be distributed, discreetly, every Friday throughout the school year and provide 12 to 14 individual servings of non-perishable food items such as tuna, pasta, rice, cereal, pop tarts, and drinks.

CUMC is a drop off site [in the Narthex] for those who wish to donate non-perishable food items. Food items will be packed in large zip lock bags before they are taken to Emerald Hill for distribution where they will be inconspicuously placed into specific backpacks.? The first packs will be distributed the day of the tournament.

Hulse, a 32-year-old ER nurse, has big expectations for the Power Pack Program.

?This golf tournament is the first of many,? she said.

?After Thanksgiving break we are opening the program to other students,? said Hulse explaining that Emerald Hill has 200 kids that use the reduced meal plan which is why she chose to start with that school.

?And Emerald Hill is the smallest school of need in Culpeper,? Hulse said.?

The tournament registration fee is $75 per person, which includes 18 holes of golf, cart and lunch.

?The Power Pack Program receives only $17.40 of each registration so sponsors are very important. Hole sponsors are $100; cart sponsors are $200; event sponsors are $500 and all sponsorship money, which is tax deductible, goes directly to the Power Pack Program.

Sponsor banners will be placed at holes and on carts. Event sponsors will have signage at the registration table, which will be moved to silent auction table after the tournament starts. One event sponsor, Farm Credit and Country Mortgage, has already registered.

This year?s tournament is a better ball tournament with a shotgun start. Registration forms may be picked up at CUMC, beginning Sept. 5, and completed in advance though limited registration will be available at the tournament.?

Prizes, donated by Meadows Farm, will be awarded for closest to the hole and longest drive.?

A silent auction will begin at 10 a.m. and close at 3 p.m. with all proceeds going to the Power Pack Program. Gift baskets from local businesses, jewelry, photos and gift certificates to local restaurants, including It?s About Thyme, will be auction items.

Hulse, acknowledges that the Power Pack Program is initially serving as a test run and, after some tweaking, she said, ?It will be offered to other students, hopefully going county-wide in the future.?

Monetary donations can be made payable to CUMC with Power Pack Program denoted on the memo line.

Former SEAL: Obama administration leaks ?a personal insult,? will ?get Americans killed?

TAMPA, Fla. ? Former Navy SEAL Benjamin Smith said Thursday that the Obama administration is ?leaking like a sieve? about the exploits of American special forces, and that special operations are being weakened to the point where ?it?s going to get Americans killed.?

?It doesn?t matter whether it?s Republican or Democrat,? Smith told the Daily Caller at the Republican National Convention, ?but on the field of battle if the enemy finds out what intelligence we have, they have time to change tactics. Or they sidestep us completely because they know we?re coming.?

?Then we don?t get to fight them overseas. They come here and they kill Americans.?

Smith is a spokesman for the Special Operations OPSEC Education Fund, a non-profit group of military veterans whose TV ads have been critical of President Barack Obama for quickly claiming credit after SEALs killed Osama bin Laden in 2011.

While some political observers believe Obama?s hastily called press event unintentionally compromised American intelligence collected during the raid in Abbottabad, Pakistan, Smith said he wasn?t certain.

?Was it unintentional?? he asked. ?A leak can be a mistake, or it can be intentional for either political gain or tactical or strategic advantage.?

Smith spent nearly six years as a Navy SEAL, and said he left the service when his superiors wanted him to leave the active military theater and train future SEALs instead. ?I said ?get me back out there,?? he recounted.

?I protected people for a living ? both Americans and non-Americans alike,? he told TheDC.

Smith said he was frustrated with the Obama administration?s failure to protect?Shakeel Afridi, a Pakistani doctor who helped SEAL Team Six identify bin Laden, then the leader of the al-Qaida global?terror network.

Pakistani authorities arrested Afridi shortly after the raid on bin Laden?s compound. He was convicted in May on treason charges and sentenced to 33 years in prison.

?What do you think that tells other potential intelligence sources around the world?? Smith asked. ?It says, ?Don?t give them anything. Don?t trust them or you?ll be tortured and your family will be wiped off the face of the earth.??

The White House, said Smith, should respect the quiet dignity of special operators and keep mum about what they do.

?Stop the leaks,? he said. ?Silent professionals within special operations don?t seek accolades for achievements. They go back into the shadows.?

Obama, he added, ?could take a lesson from George W. Bush, when he got Saddam Hussein.?

?The original message coming out of the press was that ?the U.S. army got him.? Then it came out weeks later that some kid noticed Saddam?s spider hole and told a soldier.?

?And it was a Delta Force guy. But they never sought or claimed credit for the work.?

Smith came back quickly to Obama?s media availability after the bin Laden ?kill raid,? saying the intelligence information collected in Abbottabad most likely went to waste.?

?If al-Qaida doesn?t know he [bin Laden] is gone, their hackles don?t go up,? he explained.

?We had a great opportunity but the administration put all that information out there. The chance of destroying al-Qaida completely was given up within a couple of hours after the raid was over.?

Smith?s voice grew louder and cracked.

?All the work that special operators have suffered for, and given their lives for, was rendered pointless,? he said, nearly shouting over a lunchtime din at the Tampa Convention Center. ?I take it as a personal insult. These kinds of leaks kill people.?

?Sorry,? he said, lowering his voice. ?I will get emotional about this. It happens.?

'Nanoresonators' might improve cell phone performance

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Researchers have learned how to mass produce tiny mechanical devices that could help cell phone users avoid the nuisance of dropped calls and slow downloads. The devices are designed to ease congestion over the airwaves to improve the performance of cell phones and other portable devices.

"There is not enough radio spectrum to account for everybody's handheld portable device," said Jeffrey Rhoads, an associate professor of mechanical engineering at Purdue University.

The overcrowding results in dropped calls, busy signals, degraded call quality and slower downloads. To counter the problem, industry is trying to build systems that operate with more sharply defined channels so that more of them can fit within the available bandwidth.

"To do that you need more precise filters for cell phones and other radio devices, systems that reject noise and allow signals only near a given frequency to pass," said Saeed Mohammadi, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering who is working with Rhoads, doctoral student Hossein Pajouhi and other researchers.

The Purdue team has created devices called nanoelectromechanical resonators, which contain a tiny beam of silicon that vibrates when voltage is applied. Researchers have shown that the new devices are produced with a nearly 100 percent yield, meaning nearly all of the devices created on silicon wafers were found to function properly.

"We are not inventing a new technology, we are making them using a process that's amenable to large-scale fabrication, which overcomes one of the biggest obstacles to the widespread commercial use of these devices," Rhoads said.

Findings are detailed in a research paper appearing online in the journal IEEE Transactions on Nanotechnology. The paper was written by doctoral students Lin Yu and Pajouhi, Rhoads, Mohammadi, and graduate student Molly Nelis.

In addition to their use as future cell phone filters, such nanoresonators also could be used for advanced chemical and biological sensors in medical and homeland-defense applications and possibly as components in computers and electronics.

The devices are created using silicon-on-insulator, or SOI, fabrication -- the same method used by industry to manufacture other electronic devices. The resonators can be readily integrated into electronic circuits and systems because SOI is compatible with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technology, or CMOS, another mainstay of electronics manufacturing used to manufacture computer chips.

The resonators are in a class of devices called nanoelectromechanical systems, or NEMS.

The new device is said to be "highly tunable," which means it could enable researchers to overcome manufacturing inconsistencies that are common in nanoscale devices.

"Because of manufacturing differences, no two nanoscale devices perform the same rolling off of the assembly line," Rhoads said. "You must be able to tune them after processing, which we can do with these devices."

The heart of the device is a silicon beam attached at two ends. The beam, which vibrates in the center like a jump rope, is about two microns long and 130 nanometers wide, or about 1,000 times thinner than a human hair. Applying alternating current to the beam causes it to selectively vibrate side-to-side or up and down and also allows the beam to be finely adjusted, or tuned.

The nanoresonators were shown to control their vibration frequencies better than other resonators. The devices might replace electronic parts to achieve higher performance and lower power consumption.

"A vivid example is a tunable filter," Mohammadi said. "It is very difficult to make a good tunable filter with transistors, inductors and other electronic components, but a simple nanomechanical resonator can do the job with much better performance and at a fraction of the power."

Not only are they more efficient than their electronic counterparts, he said, but they also are more compact.

"Because the devices are tiny and the fabrication has almost a 100 percent yield, we can pack millions of these devices in a small chip if we need to," Mohammadi said. "It's too early to know exactly how these will find application in computing, but since we can make these tiny mechanical devices as easily as transistors, we should be able to mix and match them with each other and also with transistors in order to achieve specific functions. Not only can you put them side-by-side with standard computer and electronic chips, but they tend to work with near 100 percent reliability."

The new resonators could provide higher performance than previous MEMS, or microelectromechanical systems.

In sensing application, the design enables researchers to precisely measure the frequency of the vibrating beam, which changes when a particle lands on it. Analyzing this frequency change allows researchers to measure minute masses. Similar sensors are now used to research fundamental scientific questions. However, recent advances may allow for reliable sensing with portable devices, opening up a range of potential applications, Rhoads said.

Such sensors have promise in detecting and measuring constituents such as certain proteins or DNA for biological testing in liquids, gases and the air, and the NEMS might find applications in breath analyzers, industrial and food processing, national security and defense, and food and water quality monitoring.

"The smaller your system, the smaller the mass you can measure," Rhoads said. "Most of the field-deployable sensors we've seen in the past have been based on microscale technologies, so this would be hundreds or thousands of times smaller, meaning we should eventually be able to measure things that much smaller."

The work is based at the Dynamic Analysis of Micro- and Nanosystems Laboratory at the Birck Nanotechnology Center in Purdue's Discovery Park. Other faculty members and graduate students also use the specialized facility.

The researchers have filed a patent application for the concept. The research is funded by the National Science Foundation.

NYC tops list of cities with ?most spoiled kids?

New York City residents spend more on their children than any other U.S. city. (Janine Costa/Retuers)New York City's borough of Manhattan tops a new list measuring which cities spend the most on their children. The data was compiled by Bundle, which compared spending habits on young children against the national average.

Another New York City borough is also home to the second "most spoiled" location on the list, Brooklyn. Miami came in at number three.

However, Bundle notes with "somewhat of a surprise" that the number four city on the list is Minneapolis. Interestingly, its twin city, Saint Paul, was near the bottom of the list, spending 50 percent less than the national average on children's items.

The information collected did not include items like food and health care. It focused on more dispensable items, such as toy store sales, clothing and "other services" for kids. The spending numbers for the past three years were included in the sample.

The most average city on the list is Nashville, whose spending matched the national average. Cincinnati, Chicago, Forth Worth, Fort Lauderdale and San Diego were also within five percent of the national average.

Joining Saint Paul as the least spending cities on the list are Columbus, Indianapolis, Madison and Milwaukee.

Softer fast food restaurant lighting and music can cut calorie intake 18 percent

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? 0mYour mood for food can be changed by a restaurant's choice of music and lighting, leading to increased satisfaction and reduced calorie intake, according to a new study.

"When we did a makeover of a fast-food restaurant, we found that softer music and lighting led diners to eat 175 fewer calories and enjoy it more," said the study's lead author, Brian Wansink, professor of marketing and director of Cornell University's Food and Brand Lab.

Wansink and his co-author, Koert van Ittersum of the Georgia Institute of Technology, found that softening the lighting and music in fast-food restaurants didn't change what people ordered, but it caused them to eat 18 percent less of what they ordered -- 775 calories instead of 949. They also rated the food as more enjoyable. The results are posted online in the journal Psychological Reports.

The Wansink-Ittersum study counters the popular notion that people who dine in a relaxed environment, with soft lighting and mellow music, will order more food and eat more than those in a more typical dining environment.

"These results suggest that a more relaxed environment increases satisfaction and decreases consumption," Wansink said. "This is important information for fast-food restaurants, which are often accused of contributing to obesity: Making simple changes away from brighter lights and sound-reflecting surfaces can go a long way toward reducing overeating -- and increase their customers' satisfaction at the same time."

Ukraine opposition leader appeals to Europe court

STRASBOURG, France (AP) ? Lawyers for Ukraine's jailed opposition leader, Yulia Tymoshenko, appealed to Europe's human rights court Tuesday as her only hope for a fair hearing, accusing the government of rigging the criminal case against her. A lawyer for the government denied any political motive and said her complaints about prison conditions and injuries were groundless.

An architect of Ukraine's 2004 Orange Revolution, Tymoshenko has been jailed since her arrest in a courtroom in August 2011, accused of negotiating a corrupt gas deal with Russia when she was prime minister. Supporters of the charismatic leader famed for her golden braids say she was jailed as the most potent threat to her political archrival, President Viktor Yanukovich.

Tuesday's testimony covered both the mundane questions of prison cell windows and cold running water, and the significant issues of inmate privacy, abuse and political retribution. Since the initial charges, the government has continued to build allegations against Tymoshenko: She went on trial in June on charges of evading several million dollars in taxes 15 years ago, and is the subject of a slew of other criminal investigations, including a murder case.

In April, Tymoshenko went on a hunger strike in jail, accusing prison guards of punching her in the stomach and twisting her limbs.

Since then, Western concern over her arrest has grown, and European leaders boycotted Euro 2012 soccer matches this summer to protest her detention.

"All this process has been prearranged and prewritten by the regime," said Tymoshenko's daughter, Eugenia, who attended Tuesday's hearing.

On Wednesday, Ukraine's highest court is scheduled to rule on her detention; previous rulings have consistently upheld the government, and Eugenia Tymoshenko said she held out little hope that the next decision would be different.

The government's lawyer, Nazar Kulchitsky, denied Yulia Tymoshenko had been mistreated in prison, saying an inquiry determined that the prominent bruises were either self-inflicted or simply the manifestation of an earlier illness. When pressed by a judge, he could not explain how Tymoshenko could have bruised herself. Kulchitsky said Tymoshenko repeatedly refused medical treatment while in detention.

He acknowledged that she had been under video surveillance in violation of her privacy, but said there were no recordings of her. He offered little explanation for why Tymoshenko's cellmate was taken away just before the time when the former prime minister said she was attacked by the guards, except to say that she was supposed to undergo a medical check.

After the hearing, Kulchitsky questioned the former prime minister's allegations that the case against her was political.

"The fact that Tymoshenko was a political figure is not enough to say that she was a victim of political repression," he said.

He also denied that Tymoshenko was arrested because she acted disrespectfully to the court: "The only grounds for her arrest was that she was trying to hide the truth."

Tymoshenko's lawyer, Sergei Vlasenko, said the case against the former prime minister was rigged and called on the panel of judges in the European Court of Human Rights to rule for her. Ukraine, a signatory to the European Convention on Human Rights, could face penalties if it loses the case.

"There is no fair judiciary in Ukraine at all , and there is no fair judiciary for Mrs. Tymoshenko," he said. "She is absolutely isolated from any communication with her relatives and with the press. . She asked me to address you asking help."

Ukraine's highest court is scheduled to rule Wednesday on the gas case, and if the decision goes against Tymoshenko as her lawyers expect, she will be able to appeal again to the European court, said Roman Kuybida, an analyst with the Kiev-based Center for Political and Legal Reforms.

Tymoshenko's following remains strong in Ukraine, where demonstrations at the prison in support of her can grow to thousands of people crying "Freedom for Yulia!"

Colombia's president: talks held with FARC rebels

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) ? President Juan Manuel Santos said Monday that his government has opened "exploratory talks" with Colombia's main rebel groups in a bid to end a stubborn half-century-old conflict.

Santos' announcement in a brief televised address followed mounting rumors of talks supposedly held in Cuba between representatives of his government and the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.

Santos offered no details of the talks, including when they began.

"In the coming days the results of the conversations with the FARC will become known," he said.

Santos said military operations would continue "on every single centimeter of national territory" during whatever peace process might emerge.

That statement was a clear allusion to the last peace dialogue held with the FARC, when the government surrendered a Switzerland-sized swath of southern Colombia to the rebels from 1990-2002 and reconciliation efforts collapsed as the guerrillas continued to mount attacks on security forces, kidnap politicians and traffic in cocaine.

Santos also mentioned that Colombia's No. 2 rebel band, the National Liberation Army known by its Spanish-language initials ELN had expressed a desire to participate in peace talks.

The ELN has also held failed peace talks with the government in the past.

Zimbabwe conservationists: wildlife threatened

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) ? Tens of thousands of wild animals face annihilation in a wave of land takeovers in southeastern Zimbabwe by politicians of President Robert Mugabe's party, a consortium of wildlife ranchers charged Sunday.

The Save Valley Conservancy said thousands of people's livelihoods also are threatened in the 1,000 square mile (2,600 square kilometer) nature preserve and surrounding districts after hunting permits and land leases were granted to 25 leaders of the ZANU-PF party under a black empowerment program.

In Sunday newspaper advertisements, the consortium said "greedy individuals" ? including a provincial governor and a Cabinet minister ? wrongly claimed it was white dominated. The conservancy said Mugabe had used color as "a racial tool" to collapse world-renowned conservation efforts for short-term gain.

"When humans behave like animals, we destroy not only each other but generations to come," the group said.

The advertisements, the most strongly worded statements in the dispute so far, said politicians "want to destroy agreements and policies that have made Save the world leader in conservation management."

Save, pronounced Sa-veh in the local Ndebele language, is a habitat for elephant, zebra, giraffe, as well as the nation's second largest surviving population of endangered black rhinoceros. The area also supports an array of African antelope and most species of birds and small animals.

"We as humans can help stop using color as a racial tool to destroy the very people who are working for our common good," said the advertisements, under the heading: Animals don't see in color.

Several Western investors, the World Wildlife Fund and conservation groups in Europe and the United States have funded breeding and animal research programs in Save.

European Union officials in Zimbabwe have warned the Save land takeovers put at risk bilateral agreements on conservation between Zimbabwe and European countries ahead of the U.N. World Tourism Organization summit scheduled in the northwestern Zimbabwean resort of Victoria Falls next year.

The state Herald newspaper, controlled by Mugabe loyalists, reported Saturday that the new conservancy members linked to Mugabe's party fired the consortium's longtime chairman Basil Nyabdaza, an agricultural estates executive, and his deputy, rancher Willy Pabst.

A Mugabe party lawmaker was chosen to replace Nyabadza, the paper reported.

It also reported that Tourism Minister Walter Mzembi, seen as a moderate in Mugabe's party, said he was opposed to new conservancy members from the ZANU-PF party hierarchy in the southern Masvingo province being "imposed" on the existing grouping of conservation enterprises and small-scale ranch operators.

Mzembi said many of those party officials had already benefited from black empowerment programs since the often violent seizures of thousands of commercial farms began in 2000, The Herald reported.

Samsung enters advertising market with small-bezel and transparent displays

Samsung builds businessonly transparent and bezelfree screens

Mad Men marathons aside, it's rare that we dream of a career in advertising, but Samsung's latest pair of commercial displays have turned our head. The Korean giant has developed a 21.6-inch, 1:1 radio ("square" to us normals) display with a 5.5mm bezel that can be used to develop video walls, installations or 3D sculptures. It's reportedly far more environmentally friendly than whacking a TV on your showroom wall, drawing 30 percent less power and auto-adjusting its own brightness depending on the ambient light.

It's also unveiling the NL22B, a transparent LCD screen / case that builds on the see-through tech we saw at CES. The interactive display is designed to let you see facts and figures while keeping one eye on the merchandise at all times. It's imagined to be used in high-class jewelers, using interactivity to tease us toward buying that $4,000 watch. Both are being shown at IFA this week, but don't expect to see them available to buy -- so stash those dreams of covering every wall in house with these things, at least until you own your own advertising firm.

Neil Armstrong, 1930-2012: U.S. astronaut was first man to walk on the moon

ScienceDaily (Aug. 25, 2012) ? Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon during the 1969 Apollo 11 mission, has died, following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures. He was 82.

Armstrong's words "That is one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind," spoken on July 20, 1969, as he became the first person ever to step onto another planetary body, instantly became a part of history.

Those few words from the Sea of Tranquillity were the climactic fulfillment of the efforts and hopes of millions of people and the expenditure of billions of dollars. A plaque on one of the lander's legs that concluded "We came in peace for all mankind," further emphasized that Armstrong and fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin were there as representatives of all humans.

Armstrong is survived by his wife, two sons, a stepson, a stepdaughter, 10 grandchildren, and a brother and sister.

"Neil Armstrong was a hero not just of his time, but of all time," said President Barack Obama. "Thank you, Neil, for showing us the power of one small step."

Armstrong's family released the following statement on Saturday:

"Neil Armstrong was also a reluctant American hero who always believed he was just doing his job. He served his Nation proudly, as a navy fighter pilot, test pilot, and astronaut. He also found success back home in his native Ohio in business and academia, and became a community leader in Cincinnati. ...

"While we mourn the loss of a very good man, we also celebrate his remarkable life and hope that it serves as an example to young people around the world to work hard to make their dreams come true, to be willing to explore and push the limits, and to selflessly serve a cause greater than themselves."

The family will be providing further updates at www.neilarmstronginfo.com .

"As long as there are history books, Neil Armstrong will be included in them, remembered for taking humankind's first small step on a world beyond our own," said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden.

"Besides being one of America's greatest explorers," Bolden added, "Neil carried himself with a grace and humility that was an example to us all."

Apollo 11 lunar module pilot and fellow moonwalker Buzz Aldrin on Armstrong's passing: "I am very saddened to learn of the passing of Neil Armstrong today. Neil and I trained together as technical partners but were also good friends who will always be connected through our participation in the Apollo 11 mission. Whenever I look at the moon it reminds me of the moment over four decades ago when I realized that even though we were farther away from earth than two humans had ever been, we were not alone."

Apollo 11 command module pilot Michael Collins said simply, "He was the best, and I will miss him terribly."

"The passing of Neil Armstrong has shocked all of us at the Johnson Space Center," said Center Director Michael Coats. The whole world knew Neil as the first man to step foot on the Moon, but to us he was a co-worker, a friend, and an outstanding spokesman for the Human Space Program. His quiet confidence and ability to perform under pressure set an example for all subsequent astronauts. Our role model will be missed."

"Neil Armstrong was a very personal inspiration to all of us within the astronaut office," said Bob Behnken, Chief of NASA's Astronaut Office. "His historic step onto the Moon's surface was the foundation for many of our personal dreams to become astronauts. The only thing that outshone his accomplishments was his humility about those accomplishments. We will miss him as a friend, mentor, explorer and ambassador for the American spirit of ingenuity."

Armstrong's single sentence, though it was focused above the national divisions and quarrels of Earth, still signified unquestionably the U.S. victory in the desperate space race with the Soviet Union.

Neil A. Armstrong was born Aug. 5, 1930, in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He earned an aeronautical engineering degree from Purdue University and a master's in aerospace engineering from the University of Southern California.

He was a naval aviator from 1949 to 1952. During the Korean War he flew 78 combat missions.

In 1955 he joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), NASA's predecessor, as a research pilot at Lewis Laboratory in Cleveland.

Armstrong later transferred to NACA's High Speed Flight Research Station at Edwards AFB, Calif. As project pilot, he was in the forefront of the development of many high-speed aircraft, including the X-15, which flew at 4,000 mph.

He flew more than 200 aircraft models. They included jet and rocket-powered planes, helicopters and gliders.

Armstrong was selected as an astronaut in 1962.

His first space flight was Gemini 8, which he commanded. He was the first civilian to fly a U.S. spacecraft. With fellow astronaut David R. Scott, Armstrong performed the first docking in space, with an Agena target satellite.

Less than an hour later their spacecraft began an unplanned rolling motion. After undocking, it increased to one revolution per second. One of the Gemini's 16 thrusters had stuck open because of an electrical short circuit.

Armstrong used re-entry thrusters to control the capsule, and after a 30-minute struggle, it was stabilized. Flight rules required a return to Earth after use of the re-entry thrusters, so the crewmembers fired retrorockets that sent Gemini 8 to a contingency landing zone in the Western Pacific.

The eventful flight on March 16, 1966, had taken just over 10 hours, 41 minutes.

Apollo 11 lifted off on July 16, 1969, with Armstrong, Aldrin and Mike Collins aboard. Collins remained in lunar orbit in the command module while Armstrong and Aldrin descended in the lunar module they had named Eagle to their historic landing on the moon's surface.

"Houston, Tranquillity Base here. The Eagle has landed," Armstrong said, telling a tense and waiting Earth that men had finally reached the lunar surface.

He and Aldrin spent about two hours exploring, gathering more than 50 pounds of moon rocks and setting up three scientific experiments. The next day, after 21 hours and 37 minutes on the moon, they fired Eagle's engine to begin the return to Collins and the command module.

The crew returned to Earth, landing near the USS Hornet in the Pacific after a mission of just over eight days. President Richard M. Nixon was on the aircraft carrier's deck to welcome them.

"This is the greatest week in the history of the world since the creation," Nixon told the three.

After 16 days in quarantine to protect Earth from any returned moon germs, the crew went on U.S. and international tours. Millions greeted them as heroes.

Armstrong later served as deputy associate administrator for aeronautics in the Office of Advanced Research and technology at NASA Headquarters. He resigned from the space agency in 1971. As a professor at the University of Cincinnati from 1971 to 1979, he was involved in both teaching and research.

He later went into the business world. Among other positions, he served for 10 years as chairman of Computing Technologies for Aviation Inc. of Charlottesville, Va. and later as chairman of AIL Systems Inc., an electronic systems company based in Deer Park, N.Y.

Armstrong was a fellow of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots and the Royal Aeronautical Society, and an honorary fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the International Astronautical Federation.

He was a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He served as a member of the National Commission on Space in 1985 and 1986, and in 1985 was vice chairman of the Presidential Commission on the Space Shuttle Challenger Accident. He also was chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Peace Corps from 1971 to 1973.

Seventeen countries decorated Armstrong. He received many special honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, NASA's Ambassador of Exploration Award, the Explorers Club Medal, the Robert H. Goddard Memorial Trophy, the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, the Harmon International Aviation Trophy, the Royal Geographic Society's Gold Medal, the Federation Aeronautique Internationale's Gold Space Medal, the American Astronautical Society Flight Achievement Award, the Robert J. Collier Trophy, the AIAA Astronautics Award, the Octave Chanute Award, and the John J. Montgomery Award.

You should be looking to build a business that will continue to get bigger and produce a long-term income source. In order to attain long term success through your business below are a few new and creative techniques you should use.

For your website to become a long lasting success you must get a high ranking within the search engines. Once you have your website ranking highly, you will get plenty of traffic to your site, without the need to work continuously on it. We all know that all it takes to make a business successful in the long run, is to have a great deal of traffic that become buyers. You'll have to have excellent search engine optimization in place on your web site if you want to raise yourself up within the search engine rankings. For this to happen, you have to optimize your site for the best keyword phrases you could find. When you do this, along with having an excellent back linking strategy, it should only take three to six months to be in the top five rankings in the search engines.

Pay per click marketing (or PPC) is another technique you can use to get website traffic and, with any luck, customers. Setting up your marketing campaign properly is important and tracking is vital too--when you do this, you ought to be able to keep everything in your budget.

Social media marketing is one more excellent method for increasing the traffic flowing in to your site. When you can actually rank well within sites like Digg and StumbleUpon, your website will be found by all sorts of buyers and customers. Today even big companies like Burger King and American Express are using business blogging. By building relationships, blogging is becoming a crucial part of internet marketing as a powerful way to find new clients. A long term strategy that is required for the success of your enterprise, includes both press releases and article marketing. Not only do they help to create back links for your website but they bring in new clients through the information that you offer.

To put your business in a place where it can obtain traffic and generate sales, these are just a number of the marketing strategies you need to be using. Your business has a market that needs to be targeted, and a good marketing plan is needed to make it successful.

(AP) ? It was the $1 billion question Saturday: What does Apple Inc.'s victory in an epic patent dispute over its fiercest rival mean for the U.S. smartphone industry?

Analysts from Wall Street to Hong Kong debated whether a jury's decision that Samsung Electronics Co. ripped off Apple technology would help Apple corner the U.S. smartphone market over Android rivals, or amount to one more step in a protracted legal battle over smartphone technology.

Many analysts said the decision could spell danger for competitors who, like Samsung, use Google Inc.'s Android operating system to power their cellphones.

"I am sure this is going to put a damper on Android's growth," New York-based Isi Group analyst Brian Marshall said, "It hurts the franchise."

The Silicon Valley jury found that some of Samsung's products illegally copied features and designs exclusive to Apple's iPhone and iPad. The verdict was narrowly tailored to only Samsung, which sold more than 22 million smartphones and tablets that Apple claimed used its technology, including the "bounce-back" feature when a user scrolls to an end image, and the ability to zoom text with a tap of a finger.

But most other Apple competitors have used the Android system to produce similar technology, which could limit the features offered on all non-Apple phones, analysts said.

"The other makers are now scrambling" to find alternatives, said Rob Enderle, a leading technology analyst based in San Jose.

Seo Won-seok, a Seoul-based analyst at Korea Investment said that the popular zooming and bounce-back functions the jury said Samsung stole from Apple will be hard to replicate.

The companies could opt to pay Apple licensing fees for access to the technology or develop smarter technology to create similar features that don't violate the patent ? at a cost likely to be passed onto consumers.

Apple lawyers are planning to ask that the two dozen Samsung devices found to have infringed its patents be barred from the U.S. market. Most of those devices are "legacy" products with almost nonexistent new sales in the United States. Apple lawyers will also ask that the judge triple the damage award to $3 billion since the jury found Samsung "willfully" copied Apple's patents.

A loss to the Android-based market would represent a big hit for Google as well. Google relies on Android devices to drive mobile traffic to its search engine, which in turn generates increased advertising revenue. Android is becoming increasingly more important to Google's bottom line because Apple is phasing out reliance on Google services such as YouTube and mapping as built-in features on the iPhone and iPad.

Some experts cautioned that the decision might not be final, noting the California lawsuit is one of nine similar legal actions across the globe between the two leading smartphone makers.

Samsung has vowed to appeal the verdict all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, arguing that Apple's patents for such "obvious" things as rounded rectangle were wrongly granted. A Sept. 20 hearing is scheduled.

The $1 billion represents about 1.5 percent of Samsung's annual revenue. Jerome Schaufield, a technology professor at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute said the verdict wouldn't upend a multibillion-dollar global industry.

"Samsung is powerful," Schaufield said. "The company will regroup and go on."

Samsung engineers have already been designing around the disputed patent since last year.

"We should never count out Samsung's flexibility and nimbleness," said Mark Newman, a Hong Kong-based analyst with Sanford C. Bernstein. "This is merely an embarrassment and annoyance to the company that they will have to find ways around."

The dispute centers on Apple's dissatisfaction with Google's entry into the phone market when the search company released its Android operating system and announced any company could use it free of cost.

Google entered the market while its then-CEO Eric Schmidt was on Apple's board, infuriating Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who considered Android to be a blatant rip-off of the iPhone's innovations. Apple filed its patent infringement lawsuit in April 2011, engaging the country's highest-paid patent lawyers to demand $2.5 billion.

The verdict didn't faze some iPhone users, who said that they already know Apple phones are superior.

The rivals are "modeling phones based on what they see with the iPhone," said David Green of Wareham, Mass., finishing a call on his iPhone while waiting to catch a train.

He switched to Apple from a BlackBerry about a year ago, after becoming disenchanted with the reliability and technological features of non-Apple smartphones.

"When I got the iPhone, it worked so well that I told my friends, 'Now I have a REAL smartphone,'" Green said.
