A new paradigm for understanding the earliest eras in the history of the universe has been developed by scientists at Penn State University. Using techniques from an area of modern physics called loop quantum cosmology, developed at Penn State, the scientists now have extended analyses that include quantum physics farther back in time than ever before -- all the way to the beginning. The new paradigm of loop quantum origins shows, for the first time, that the large-scale structures we now see in the universe evolved from fundamental fluctuations in the essential quantum nature of "space-time," which existed even at the very beginning of the universe over 14 billion years ago. The achievement also provides new opportunities for testing competing theories of modern cosmology against breakthrough observations expected from next-generation telescopes. The research will be published on 11 December 2012 as an "Editor's Suggestion" paper in the scientific journal Physical Review Letters.

"We humans always have yearned to understand more about the origin and evolution of our universe," said Abhay Ashtekar, the senior author of the paper. "So it is an exciting time in our group right now, as we begin using our new paradigm to understand, in more detail, the dynamics that matter and geometry experienced during the earliest eras of the universe, including at the very beginning." Ashtekar is the Holder of the Eberly Family Chair in Physics at Penn State and the director of the university's Institute for Gravitation and the Cosmos. Coauthors of the paper, along with Ashtekar, are postdoctoral fellows Ivan Agullo and William Nelson.

The new paradigm provides a conceptual and mathematical framework for describing the exotic "quantum-mechanical geometry of space-time" in the very early universe. The paradigm shows that, during this early era, the universe was compressed to such unimaginable densities that its behavior was ruled not by the classical physics of Einstein's general theory of relativity, but by an even more fundamental theory that also incorporates the strange dynamics of quantum mechanics. The density of matter was huge then -- 10 to the 94 grams (10^94) per cubic centimeter, as compared with the density of an atomic nucleus today, which is only 10 to the 14 grams (10^14).

In this bizarre quantum-mechanical environment -- where one can speak only of probabilities of events rather than certainties -- physical properties naturally would be vastly different from the way we experience them today. Among these differences, Ashtekar said, are the concept of "time," as well as the changing dynamics of various systems over time as they experience the fabric of quantum geometry itself.

No space observatories have been able to detect anything as long ago and far away as the very early eras of the universe described by the new paradigm. But a few observatories have come close. Cosmic background radiation has been detected in an era when the universe was only 380-thousand years old. By that time, after a period of rapid expansion called "inflation," the universe had burst out into a much-diluted version of its earlier super-compressed self. At the beginning of inflation, the density of the universe was a trillion times less than during its infancy, so quantum factors are much less important in ruling the large-scale dynamics of matter and geometry.

Observations of the cosmic background radiation show that the universe had a predominantly uniform consistency after inflation, except for a light sprinkling of some regions that were more dense and others that were less dense. The standard inflationary paradigm for describing the early universe, which uses the classical-physics equations of Einstein, treats space-time as a smooth continuum. "The inflationary paradigm enjoys remarkable success in explaining the observed features of the cosmic background radiation. Yet this model is incomplete. It retains the idea that the universe burst forth from nothing in a Big Bang, which naturally results from the inability of the paradigm's general-relativity physics to describe extreme quantum-mechanical situations," Agullo said. "One needs a quantum theory of gravity, like loop quantum cosmology, to go beyond Einstein in order to capture the true physics near the origin of the universe."

Earlier work with loop quantum cosmology in Ashtekar's group had updated the concept of the Big Bang with the intriguing concept of a Big Bounce, which allows the possibility that our universe emerged not from nothing but from a super-compressed mass of matter that previously may have had a history of its own.

Even though the quantum-mechanical conditions at the beginning of the universe were vastly different from the classical-physics conditions after inflation, the new achievement by the Penn State physicists reveals a surprising connection between the two different paradigms that describe these eras. When scientists use the inflation paradigm together with Einstein's equations to model the evolution of the seed-like areas sprinkled throughout the cosmic background radiation, they find that the irregularities serve as seeds that evolve over time into the galaxy clusters and other large-scale structures that we see in the universe today. Amazingly, when the Penn State scientists used their new loop-quantum-origins paradigm with its quantum-cosmology equations, they found that fundamental fluctuations in the very nature of space at the moment of the Big Bounce evolve to become the seed-like structures seen in the cosmic microwave background.

"Our new work shows that the initial conditions at the very beginning of the universe naturally lead to the large-scale structure of the universe that we observe today," Ashtekar said. "In human terms, it is like taking a snapshot of a baby right at birth and then being able to project from it an accurate profile of how that person will be at age 100."

"This paper pushes back the genesis of the cosmic structure of our universe from the inflationary epoch all the way to the Big Bounce, covering some 11 orders of magnitude in the density of matter and the curvature of space-time," Nelson said. "We now have narrowed down the initial conditions that could exist at the Big Bounce, plus we find that the evolution of those initial conditions agrees with observations of the cosmic background radiation."

The team's results also identify a narrower range of parameters for which the new paradigm predicts novel effects, distinguishing it from standard inflation. Ashtekar said, "It is exciting that we soon may be able to test different predictions from these two theories against future discoveries with next-generation observational missions. Such experiments will help us to continue gaining a deeper understanding of the very, very early universe."

Consumer Reports: Verizon ranked the best major US carrier, AT&T ranked the worst

Nothing much has changed in this year's mobile carrier satisfaction survey from Consumer Reports, with Verizon again being rated the best of the major providers, netting good scores for voice and data service quality, staff knowledge and issue resolution. The other big players also ranked in the same order this time around, with Sprint and T-Mobile following behind Big Red, and AT&T staying in last position. None of the bottom three scored particularly highly, especially in relation to voice service quality, and only four points separated them in the ratings. While AT&T had the worst value and data service quality scores, its LTE network was ranked the best of any carrier, and the least problematic. MVNO Consumer Cellular, which piggybacks on AT&T's network, didn't disappoint after last year's overall first place finish, keeping the top spot and receiving great scores all round. Full results of the survey, which polled 63,253 subscribers, will be available in Consumer Reports' January 2013 issue.

Chilean Architecture

When an architect begins to design a house, he/she should put into consideration new ways of thinking since every situation is different varying with time, the place and the clients. The client's personality, social factors, new building technologies and the site characteristics can merge to come up with a new approach.

For example, In Chile, the process and time in which materials are selected in order to determine the design criteria clearly shows disparity in philosophy. Material selection in architectural design is a clear indication of its relationship with geography, its closeness to technological advancements and the scheme's budget.

With Chile's new societal openness and new economy, the country's architectural design experimentation has boomed. For architectures to find form in this country, some use recycled materials, others use particular materials that are of a standardized nature to cut down construction costs and others emulate local materials as their basis of coming up with a new architectural style.

One of these extraordinary works of architecture is by a German called Del sol. His hotel 'Remota' is made up of a grass roofing and his design founded on agricultural outbuildings . The furrows of the hillside and the stretched out rectangles barns act as a basis or rather points for reference. Remota references so much to the local landscape because of del sol's use of grass pastures to put together the roof. Just by the mere look of it, anybody would notice the extensive extent to which the hotel merges with the surroundings as it is displayed below.

Del sol's hotel Casa Granero's home is the other work of architecture worth examining in these Chilean south Lake District landscapes. This house's design has been borrowed greatly from the local agricultural building. The design uses local unfinished forest wood to m?lange with the surrounding forest. Casa Granero's home Lakeside house in Chile's region IX looks like a minuscule castle made of bricks with a stone front wall. However, this is only an overture to a very expansive structure made of glass that puts its inhabitants directly into the heart of nature.

Cristian's Lakeside house
This combination of stone, steel, concrete and glass in the right proportions is the work of architect Cristian Undurraga and Mario Marchant. Another extreme example in Chilean architecture is the copper-claud house built by Smijan Radic in Talca. This house is built on old materials as a way of discovering form. The house has modern boxes and lines in place instead of Del sol's adobe construction of his hotel explora Atacama. Smiljan specifically uses material as a foundation for the experimentation of design. Material can be chosen for philosophical, practical or aesthetic purposes.

Smiljan Radic's copper claud house
On addition to that, Eduardo Castillo's architectural design in Chile's lakeside district takes up the shape of the minuscule roadside shrines to the dead in South America found scattered across all rural roads. He wanted to infuse religion with architecture, in his quest, Eduardo adds magnifies sculptured structures of clay to full scale structures people can live in. Eduardo's shrine like design

The New Internet Teaching Stars - Technology Review

Gold star: Calvin Hollywood created a business teaching Photoshop tricks online.

Who is Calvin Hollywood? In the world of Photoshop instruction in Germany, Hollywood?s name towers above the rest.

A self-styled maverick of online Photoshop tutorials, Hollywood sticks to his strengths: retouching photographs, teaching others to do the same, and marketing himself. It?s an expansive and lucrative enterprise.

His business includes DVDs, live online webinars, and $30 downloadable courses that people can complete on their own time and schedules. To help generate Internet sales, Hollywood does appearances at shows like ?Horror Nights,? a dance party frequented by people dressed as vampires and zombies. Hollywood says online teaching earns him as much as $16,000 a month.

The Web is starting to change education (see ?The Most Important Educational Technology in 200 Years?) and perhaps nowhere are its transforming effects so apparent as among teachers. Teaching is among the worst paid professions in the U.S. (starting salaries are $30,377 a year). But the Web is rewriting the rules of supply and demand. For popular instructors like Hollywood, who reach beyond physical classrooms, teaching has never offered a greater chance to become rich and famous.

This effect of technology was dubbed the ?Superstar Phenomenon? in a now canonical 1981 paper by the labor economist Sherwin Rosen. In his study, The Economics of Superstars, Rosen described mathematically how new media, like radio and TV, concentrated earnings among fewer performers or bestsellers. It did so by increasing the audience of stars, and because consumers flocked to the product they considered the best.

The Web, with its ability to broadcast video, live exercises, and interactive documents, is extending the superstar rule to teachers of everything from computer programming to probability analysis. One expected result, say economists, is that a small number of popular teachers could end up winning the vast share of teaching income. The Wall Street Journal, which discovered a guitar teacher streaming paid classes for 1,500 people from his basement computer, concluded that although we will always need teachers, we may need ?fewer of them.?

Because teaching is a performance art, online education is favoring those like Hollywood, who has a flamboyant style, or others able to connect with their audience. Salman Khan, the stock-picker-turned-tutor whose YouTube math lessons have been viewed over 200 million times (see ?Q&A: Salman Khan?), was recently judged by Yuri Milner, the Russian Internet investor, as the world?s ?first superstar teacher.?

Now more teachers are looking for online outlets, including on commercial websites such like Lynda.com and Udemy, which act as digital adult-education catalogs. Udemy broadcasts classes; any teacher can join in exchange for a 30 percent cut of their revenue. The company?s most popular classes include courses like ?Become a Web Developer from Scratch,? taught by Victor Bastos, a 32-year-old Spanish programmer living in Lisbon, Portugal.

Hollywood, who is 36, says he did not know how to use Photoshop until 2005. At the time, he was a boot camp instructor in Germany?s Air Force. But after seeing a friend stitch together two images using the program, Hollywood says, it was Liebe auf den ersten Blick, or ?love at first sight.? He bought a DSLR camera, a Nikon D70, just so he could have pictures to retouch.

He began teaching Photoshop to Air Force colleagues, eventually branching out into DVDs and seminars, and taking on his stage name, Calvin Hollywood (he declined to reveal his real name). The first time he put a seminar online, he says, 100 spots sold out in 10 minutes. These days, he does most of his Web teaching during the winter. ?September to March, where the weather is not good here in Germany,? says Hollywood. ?People don?t like to travel.?

The Web?s new celebrity teachers don?t necessarily need any academic credentials. Hollywood says he never got further than middle school. What counts is personal style and knowledge to impart. In Hollywood?s case, what he teaches is an unusually heavy style of digital photo enhancement he calls ?Calvinization.? He recalls how other Photoshop teachers scolded him: ?You can?t do that. You don?t do that. Calvin Hollywood, ?Oh my god you can?t do that!??

Katrin Eismann, chair of the digital photography department at New York?s School of Visual Arts, hosted Hollywood on his first trip to the United States in 2008. She says he is part of a new generation of Photoshop teachers who are turning retouching into a form of illustration. That?s different than how Adobe?s image-editing program was used in the past, which was more about correction than creation, and not very glamorous.

Internet instruction has changed that, at least for Hollywood. ?He has good energy, he?s fun, and he ? doesn?t take himself too seriously,? says Eismann. ?He even says that his way is not [necessarily] the right way. As an educator, I admire that.?

CA University Launches Marijuana Institute

A California State University in the famous marijuana growing region of Humboldt County has launched an academic institute devoted exclusively to marijuana.

The Humboldt Institute for Interdisciplinary Marijuana Research at Humboldt State University utilizes the skills and experience of faculty members from the professional fields of sociology, psychology, politics, geography and economics.

"If anyone is going to have a marijuana institute, it really should be Humboldt State." said HIIMR co-chair Dr. Erick Eschker.? "It has the potential to be a world-class institute."? Eschker, an economist, is currently studying marijuana production's impact on Humboldt County employment.

The main goal of the Humboldt Institute for Interdisciplinary Marijuana Research is to improve the physical, social, economic and environmental health of people and communities through the scientific study of cannabis.

An interdisciplinary institute, the HIIMR at Humboldt State University is hosting a series of marijuana lectures through Spring 2013 that are open to the public.

Marijuana-intensive topics include:

  • Marijuana regulatory reform The campaign against marijuana planting
Effects of cultivation on local wildlife
  • Environmental impacts of marijuana production
    Multi-state marijuana legalization efforts
  • Netherlands drug policy
  • Economic impacts of pot legalization

Pot-enjoying Ohio defendant agrees to quit

(AP) ? An avid marijuana user has agreed to give up his pastime to avoid a jail sentence from a southwest Ohio judge perplexed by his reluctance.

Nineteen-year-old Damaine Mitchell got credit for time served for marijuana possession, ending that case. Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Melba Marsh convicted him of possession Monday after ruling him not guilty of trafficking. He remains jailed on a trespassing charge.

Mitchell first had to pledge to stop smoking marijuana and to seek treatment. The Cincinnati Enquirer reports (http://cin.ci/TqVSa4 ) that Mitchell told her in an earlier court appearance that he doubted he could stop smoking marijuana, which he'd been doing since age 10. She had denied his request to smoke one more joint before he gave it up.

Finding a Crowdsourced Cure For Brain Cancer

This is incredibly misguided, and that is the most charitable way of putting it.

There is no way in hell you're going to be able to separate the wheat from the chaff with such a volume of random input

Oh really? So from your own point of view, there is no way in hell such a thing as Slashdot can work, all those random comments from idiots who can't even RTFA! Not mentioning such a ludicrous idea as an open encyclopedia where every other ignorant can edit an article.

Yes, a lot of suggestions are going to come from homeopathy and spiritual healers. And you know, then, maybe these people will learn more in the process than if they were being outlawed and chased by lawyers.

Lab Report: Does Website Management Matter? | Haden Interactive

Posted by Rebecca Haden on Monday, November 26, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

We often hear people say that they?re going to try a website and see how it goes. If it?s good for their business, they?ll commit funds for a professional site or for website management.

As a general rule, this doesn?t work.

In the early days of the internet, you could build a website and be fairly confident that people would find it, just as the first store in a pioneer town could be confident of foot traffic. Now, with billions of sites on the web, it?s a different story ? just as it is for new stores in town.

We built a lab site called FreshPlans in 2010 (it?s also our community service venture, serving K-12 educators). We did some judicious linkbuilding, we used social media, and we added fresh content each weekday. No paid ads, no exhortations to family and friends to ?Like? it ? just good SEO management. In its first six months, it went from 49 visits to 8,123 visits. We no longer update FreshPlans every day (more like once a week), but it had over 16,000 visits this month, so its traffic is still increasing.

Six months ago we started another lab site, Almost Outside. This time, we? wrote up 27 pages of high quality content, and then completely ignored the site. No social media, no new content, no linkbuilding.

This is just about what most businesses do. Well, many of them start with five pages of content, but we wanted to give our site a fair shot.

We?ve now had the website up for six months. It has gone from five visits in the first month to six visits this month. It?s indexed by Google, it has about 40% search traffic, it shows up well for several keywords, but basically no one visits this website.

Sound familiar? For many professionals and small businesses, it will. ?We had a website,? they?ll say, ?but it really didn?t do anything for us.?

We?re not saying that every well-managed website will have the thousands of visitors FreshPlans gets each month ? your business may not even need that kind of traffic. But the difference between FreshPlans and Almost Outside tells you something.

In their first six months, FreshPlans got these things, and Almost Outside didn?t:

  • Regular blogging
  • Linkbuilding
  • Social media
  • SEO strategy based on analytics

After six months, FreshPlans had increased traffic by over 1,000 percent. Almost Outside has not increased traffic. Neither of these sites is associated with a business, but we can feel pretty confident that ? if each was supporting a brick and mortar business ? FreshPlans would be happy with the results of their website and Almost Outside would not.

We see again and again that companies with a good website and an integrated SEO strategy including regular content production, social media, and linkbuilding see great results. A website that is built and ignored doesn?t see those results ? no matter who builds it.

Where would you like your online marketing results to be six months from now? Do you want results like FreshPlans, or like Almost Outside? It?s your choice. If you want to be looking back and saying that online marketing didn?t really do much for you, continue to ignore your company website ? or not to have one. If you?d like to benefit from the power of the internet, give us a call at 479.966.9761.

Camacho was pronounced dead after being taken off life support following a second heart attack early Saturday morning, Rio Piedras Medical Director Ernesto Torres said.

Puerto Rico officials planned a public wake for the boxer at the Department of Sports & Recreation headquarters in San Juan, but details were pending.

The former U.S. boxing champ had been declared brain dead on Thursday after he was shot on Tuesday while sitting in a car with a friend, Adrian Mojica Moreno, 49, outside a liquor store in the San Juan suburb of Bayamon, Camacho's birthplace.

Two gunmen opened fire on the car, killing the driver, Mojica Moreno, and hitting Camacho in the jaw. The bullet fractured two vertebrae and lodged in his shoulder, damaging the arteries that carried blood to the brain, doctors said.

Family members had debated removing him from life support, with some members including his son Hector "Machito" Camacho holding out hope for his recovery.

On Friday evening, his mother Maria Matias acknowledged during a brief talk with reporters at the medical center that that "God has taken him" and indicated that she was waiting for the arrival of Camacho's other children to Puerto Rico before disconnecting him.

Some family members had discussed organ donation, but Torres said too much time had passed from when the former fighter was declared brain dead on Thursday morning to donate his organs now.
