DIRECTOR, ACADEMIC ADVISING AND RETENTION CENTER
Western Kentucky University's Division of Enrollment Management in the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs invites applicants for Director, Academic Advising and Retention Center (AARC). The University seeks an experienced administrator who embodies a student-centered educational philosophy and recognizes the importance of the relationships between student development, retention, and academic success The Director oversees the delivery of comprehensive educational support services, supervises a permanent professional staff comprised of two assistant directors, two retention specialists, and an office assistant. In addition, 70-80 part-time peer tutors provide front-line student services.
The Director is also responsible for sustaining critical interactions and working collaboratively with other units on campus including, but not limited to, the Writing Center, Learning Center, Office of Undergraduate Admissions, Campus Advising Network, Office of Student Affairs (Judicial Programs), student ombudsperson, and the senior staff of the Division of Enrollment Management.?
This position reports
directly to the Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management and will be under the day-to-day supervision of the Assistant Vice
President for Retention and Student Services. This is a twelve-month, full-time position and the successful candidate will serve as a senior
staff member in the Division of Enrollment Management. Evening and weekend work is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Required
- Knowledge of best practices in undergraduate student support, in particular academic support for student and demonstrated effectiveness working with students to design plans of action to achieve academic success;
- Working knowledge of highly effective student programming and engagement techniques;
- Strong familiarity with collegiate academic and administrative procedures (e.g. admissions, registration, financial aid, academic advising and orientation, etc.);
- Experience working effectively as an integral part of University-wide initiatives and cross-functional development teams;
- Demonstrated experience working with college students from diverse backgrounds;
- Advanced skills in making formal presentations and public communication.
- Possess the ability to organize and effectively communicate significant quantities of information to internal and external groups;
- Advanced computer skills including spreadsheets, word processing and databases;
- Demonstrated effectiveness as an administrator; ability to work collegially and productively with staff and colleagues.
- Doctoral degree or Master's degree with five to seven years of experience providing academic assistance to students
- Three to five years of administrative experience in a college or university in an established student success and retention program
- The successful applicant must have a desire to provide outstanding leadership in advisement
- Experience in academic student advising, orientation, and retention
- Strong technology and web based skills
- Excellent communication and student service skills
- Must be able to handle difficult situations with tact and diplomacy
