The Single Life: The Vegan & The Carnivore - What I learned about ...

There once lived a boy (who will remain nameless) and a girl (that would be me) who fell madly in like. They connected on several subjects and shared common characteristics. They even had the same birthday. The two spent hours on the telephone, telling stories that dated back to their childhoods.

Then?.. they discussed diets.

And that?s when they realized they?weren?t?exactly the same after all. The boy believed an organic, all natural lifestyle. He?didn?t?digest meat or dairy and never used toxic products. Since he was a health coach, he felt it was his job to ?teach? her how to eat properly. The girl grew up in a family filled with entertainers. Many memories were made around the dinner table. ?And, the feasts featured foods that once clucked, mooed, gobbled or oinked. She wondered if he would get ?eaten alive?, by her family, for his vegan views when he came to dinner in the future. ?And, she got annoyed when he tried to shove his food philosophy down her throat.

The boy insisted that their future child would grow up vegan. Before the baby was born (and even conceived for that matter), he wanted his offspring to come into the world at a birthing center. She was open to natural childbirth, but?wouldn?t?rule out an epidural if the pain progressed beyond what she could bear. She could give up pork and beef, but she?didn?t?see anything wrong with feeding her child chicken, turkey, fish or whatever she decided to cook for dinner. He said he cared about her health, but understood if she wouldn?t substitute tofu for turkey. They knew they had to compromise for the relationship to work.

She (I) learned a lot of valuable lessons about compromise:

Do Respect the Other Person?s Opinion

Just because you disagree?doesn?t?mean you can?t respect another opinion. Sometimes there?s not a wrong or a right perspective, just different views. So be open minded, open to dialogue, and open to finding a reasonable solution. Also, make sure you communicate clearly. Ask for clarification. ?And, repeat what you heard to make sure you?re not misinterpreting information. When you take emotion and anger out of the conversation, you may realize that you?aren?t?as opposite as you thought.

Do Think of Yourself as a Couple?

When you think of yourself as a couple and not just individuals, you are more likely to weigh the pros and cons of a compromise. ?This allows you to see things from all sides and to pick your battles. It?s OK to give in to things such as turning off the television when your partner is on the phone or eating Italian when you really wanted Chinese. ?It won?t hurt you to watch your significant other?s favorite movie for the fifteenth time. ? Hey?.it might even help you when you want to pick the next date night activity.

Don?t Compromise Your Non-Negotiable Issues

There are such things as bad compromises. Don?t change so radically that you can?t recognize who?s staring back at you when you look in the mirror. Are you still your true, authentic self? Will you still fulfill your God given purpose in life if you compromise on the matter? Remember, compromise is not sacrifice. Sacrifice is when you give up something you strongly believe in or who you are for the relationship. Sometimes sacrifice is substituted for compromise. A compromise should not make you feel like you have been taken advantage of or wronged. You?shouldn?t?be miserable to make the other person happy.

Don?t Bend to Avoid an Obvious Breakup

Bending too far will break your back and eventually your heart ? - because you?re carrying the relationship. ?Don?t put up with someone emotionally, physically or verbally abusing you. Or, don?t turn a blind eye to your partner?s cheating ways. Don?t save a relationship that shouldn?t be saved. Compromising should stop when you are desperate to stay together in an unhealthy way. And don?t compromise to avoid an argument if you know you?ll change your mind next month, or next week!

BMWK ? What are you willing to meet in the middle on? ?What won?t you budge on? ?What have you learned about compromise from your relationships?

AT&T, Boingo, T-Mobile agree to back wireless in 30 more New York City subway stations

New York City subway WiFi plans expand to 30 more stations, let you Twitter underneath Times Square

As welcome as Transit Wireless' strategy for wireless in New York City subways has been, having access in just six stations around one Manhattan district has been limiting for locals who want to stay online underground. Thankfully, there's plans afoot to cover a much wider base. AT&T, Boingo and T-Mobile have offered to back a next wave of expansion that will cover 30 extra stations with cellular and WiFi access, in places we're more likely to recognize: Columbus Circle, Rockefeller Center and Times Square are all part of the rollout. While the tragedy of Hurricane Sandy has pushed back completion to early 2013, it shouldn't be too long before some of the city's most important hubs (and tourist traps) are covered -- and Transit Wireless' ambitions to eventually put wireless in all of New York City's subways could keep every borough online during the daily commute.

Bon Jovi says daughter's suspected drug overdose a "tragedy"

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Singer Jon Bon Jovi called his teenage daughter's apparent heroin overdose a "tragedy," and said support for the family has been "incredible," in his first public comments since Stephanie Bongiovi's arrest and release last week.

"It's human. This tragedy was something that I had to face, too, so we'll get through it," Bon Jovi told Fox television's Los Angeles affiliate on Tuesday.

"People's incredible warm wishes for my family and I have been really reassuring. So, we're good," the singer added.

Bongiovi, 19, was found unresponsive in a dorm room at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, last week due to a suspected heroin overdose.

She was arrested on drug possession charges in connection with the apparent overdose, but the charges were later dropped as New York law prohibits the prosecution of people who had overdosed and were in possession of small amounts of drugs.

She is the oldest of Bon Jovi's four children with wife Dorothea Hurley.

Bon Jovi discussed the incident while promoting upcoming December film "Stand Up Guys," starring Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Alan Arkin, for which he provided original songs.

"What I do for a living seems glitzy and glamorous, but if you don't take it too seriously, it's a great way to make a living," the singer said.

"And then life goes on. Things happen."

Hot gas bridges galaxy cluster pair

ScienceDaily (Nov. 20, 2012) ? ESA's Planck space telescope has made the first conclusive detection of a bridge of hot gas connecting a pair of galaxy clusters across 10 million light-years of intergalactic space.

Planck's primary task is to capture the most ancient light of the cosmos, the Cosmic Microwave Background, or CMB. As this faint light traverses the Universe, it encounters different types of structure including galaxies and galaxy clusters -- assemblies of hundreds to thousands of galaxies bound together by gravity.

If the CMB light interacts with the hot gas permeating these huge cosmic structures, its energy distribution is modified in a characteristic way, a phenomenon known as the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect, after the scientists who discovered it.

This effect has already been used by Planck to detect galaxy clusters themselves, but it also provides a way to detect faint filaments of gas that might connect one cluster to another.

In the early Universe, filaments of gaseous matter pervaded the cosmos in a giant web, with clusters eventually forming in the densest nodes.

Much of this tenuous, filamentary gas remains undetected, but astronomers expect that it could most likely be found between interacting galaxy clusters, where the filaments are compressed and heated up, making them easier to spot.

Planck's discovery of a bridge of hot gas connecting the clusters Abell 399 and Abell 401, each containing hundreds of galaxies, represents one such opportunity.

The presence of hot gas between the billion-light-year-distant clusters was first hinted at in X-ray data from ESA's XMM-Newton, and the new Planck data confirm the observation.

It also marks Planck's first detection of inter-cluster gas using the SZ effect technique.

By combining the Planck data with archival X-ray observations from the German satellite Rosat, the temperature of the gas in the bridge is found to be similar to the temperature of the gas in the two clusters -- on the order of 80 million degrees Celsius.

Early analysis suggests the gas could be mixture of the elusive filaments of the cosmic web mixed with gas originating from the clusters.

A more detailed analysis and the possible detection of gas bridges connecting other clusters will help to provide a more conclusive answer.
